Title of Lesson: WHAT HAPPENED FIRST?

Length of Time Needed: 45 -60mins

Materials Needed: Popcorn box and construction paper
Focus & Review

I will begin the lesson with a review of plot,


characters and settings

Lesson Objective

Students will analyze the beginning of a story.


(Including character and settings)

Teacher Input

I will ask the students


What happens at the beginning of every
story?
I will then discuss how in the beginning of
every story, the setting and the characters are
established.
I will begin reading the story of Rapunzel
aloud.
I will stop reading before I get to the major
conflict of the story.
I will then state that I just read the beginning
of the book

Guided Practice

Independent Practice

I will then ask the students to point out aspects


of the beginning of the story that they noticed.
I will have two popcorn containers
1ST popcorn container will consist of white

ruffled paper (shaped as popcorn)


2nd popcorn container will consist of yellow
ruffled paper (shaped as popcorn)
The students are to pick ONE white kernel and
ONE yellow kernel
White kernels will contain a name of a
character or multiple characters.
Yellow kernels will contain a setting.
The students are to write the beginning of a
short story establishing the character and
setting that they chose. (minimum of 2
sentences)

Students will form groups of 3-4.
Inside of their groups students will discuss
what they learned from the lesson.
One student from each group will be chosen to
report their discussion back to the rest of the
class.
Informal assessment will be on the students
participation in closing activity.
Extra time can be allotted to certain students if
necessary.
Popcorn box and construction paper
A setting and characters can be universal. (Black
white, Japan, Africa. )
SmartBoard can be used to display information
