General precautions
General precautions
Disconnect battery earth lead.
Remove glow plugs to ease turning engine.
Turn engine in normal direction of rotation (unless otherwise stated).
Observe tightening torques.
If fitted: Mark position of crankshaft position (CKP) sensor before removal.
Do NOT turn crankshaft via camshaft or other gears.
Do NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft with timing gear(s) removed.

Engine at TDC on No.1 cylinder [1] & [2] .

NOTE: No.1 cylinder positioned at flywheel end.

Install camshaft locking tool at No.4 cylinder [3] . Tool No.3445.
Before cylinder head removal, remove rocker arms to prevent valve damage.
Camshaft bearing caps are interchangeable, mark before removal.
After cylinder head installation: Check backlash at idler gear and camshaft gear [4] & [5] . Gear backlash: 0,06-0,17 mm.
If backlash not as specified:
Slacken idler gear bolt [6] .
Adjust backlash by moving idler gear bearing to left or right.
Axial play of all idler gears: 0,06-0,12 mm.

NOTE: Crankshaft pulley bolts MUST only be used once.
