Interview
To do interview for someone which we do not know is not an easy task. But when I have
chosen from the class mate than I felt more comfortable than someone else unknown. I chose for
an interview a lady from Brazil called Izaltina Fuller. Because people from Brazil and Nepal look
similar in physical structure. The good part I have selected her, she is completely different than
Asian culture. Other good side she has mix culture in America as a whole. Brazil is one of the
biggest country from South America and she has experienced of many different cultures. She left
Brazil 20 years ago and she has been living in the United States since 20 years to now. She is
now 50 years old energetic and active lady with American husband but no children. According to
her she has got marry a few years ago, she lived single for many years in search of good
husband. The good husband means who do not keep different in country culture and people from
other country as well as loving and taking good care of her in which she will not have to divorce
in future. Izaltina Fuller is Mormon and she love to live in Mormon society. Everyone has good
faith on country, religion and culture but there are shorten circumstance in which unwilling,
people have to leave everything behind and move to further countries.
Brazilians are Latin, so not so different from the United Stated citizens because there are
many Latins in this country too. But Brail is little different from here like environmental,
climatic and cultural. Brail is a bigger country in South America but do not have English people
like the United States and Brazilians speak Portuguese, but not Spanish. According to Izaltina

The culture of Brazil presents a very diverse nature showing that an ethnic and cultural mixing
occurred in the colonial period involving mostly Indigenous peoples of the coastal and most
accessible riverine areas, Portuguese people and Africans mix culture too.
I have understood Zaltina Fuller feeling because I am also immigrant from Nepal. When I
was here in Utah in 17th July 2008 I had face many difficulties and troubles as new people in a
new culture. This country is completely new world for new immigrants. I did not know how to
use traffics light at the beginning of my days in this country because I did not see traffic light in
my country. I was with my family but she was along here and struggled for new life along time
nearly 15 years. I learned from her that Brazil also has mix culture like The United Stated,
Portuguese and Africans. The very interesting and common thing is that both countries are
influenced by Africans culture and different is that Brazilian are Portuguese but not Spanish or
English. Like the United Stated, the Brazilian culture is also one most varieties and diverse
culture in the world. This is due to its being a loving people of nation. The European settlers also
brought ideas, innovations and belief systems with them, shaping the local societies significantly.
All of these different influences have meant that the modern-day Brazilian cultures are unique
and very complex. Nearly 80% of the population ascribes to the Roman Catholic faith in Brazil
and remaining 20% from other religions. I have a question to her how the official language
become Portuguese in Brazil? She answer that because of mass papulation in Brazil are
immigrant from Portugal. I felt said by hearing that the lost of Brazil own culture and follower of
other immigrant culture.
I asked Zaltina about experiences being different and her answer as it is I am often
confused as being Hispanic. There is a lot of prejudice against Hispanics here. I am also darker,
and people dont like that so much here. I work as a nurse. Many times the patients relatives

come over to visit them and ask me where the nurse is. Because of my color and accent, they
dont think I am a nurse. Maybe they think I am just the cleaning person. I tried to get a loan at
the bank and I was treated as if I was stupid. They assumed I could not understand what I was
doing and they tried to take advantage of me giving me a loan with many bad terms. I did not
accept, because I am not stupid. The answer which she gave me is true, because I have such
experienced I life too. Many times I was waiting in front of customers service desk long time for
help but service desk people ignore my present and do their own work. At the same time if they
see some white people they respond before me as I was coming inside before them also. I did not
have bank credit card for 2 years in this country at the beginning.
In inter-ethic experiences Zaltina said, she always try to help people from her own culture
and they take advantage of her try to over take if they have change. She said that there is a lady
from her country who stay with her and I not pay anything but also she took the advance of her
helped and eats Zaltinas food and does not appreciate what she does for her. She said, that has
happened many times with her: helping people from own culture who end off taking advantage
of her.
About cultural identities, values, customs, dance and music her answer are as follows:
Brazilians love samba and folk music. Samba comes mostly from Africans. Brazil has a large
population of black people who were formerly slaves. Brazilians marry people of different races,
so most Brazilians have mixed blood. I am typical Brazilian, white, and black. Brazilians
are very laid back. They like to treat foreigners very nicely regardless where they come from.
Brazilians love to chat. People always talk to strangers in the street and tell them lots of things
about their personal lives. Americans dont do that. Lower class Brazilians like folk music and
dances more than higher class. Brazilian pop music is mellower like bossa nova. Carnival is a big

festival, with lots of people dancing samba in the streets. People take almost a week dancing,
drinking. People from all over the world go to Brazil to watch Carnival.
About experiences living in Utah, Zaltina said I came to Utah because I was Mormon.
But I now live in Seattle Washington, a much better place to live. I have felt a lot of prejudice
living in Utah, especially in the Mormon Church. Mormon men are very racist. I married outside
of my religion because I could not find a good husband in the Mormon Church. And her
migration experiences and language barriers she said that, she has enjoyed moving in this
country, and made a lot of friends, but moving to a different country is difficult to fit in new
environment. She still has a hard time with the language. She understand well, but she is still
trying to improve her accent. At first, it was very difficult understanding, but after a while she
learned well enough to understand the American English. She need to work on my grammar in
future too.
The best thing I learned from Zaltina about Brazil official language and religion, cultural
differences and people of the country. When I was in the United State and felt suffocation at the
beginning similar problem to all the immigrants I knew now. I knew that it is not simple and easy
to go inside the new culture and people. But it take times everything change automatically itself.
My kids forget my culture and they started to follow the American culture and they did not feel
difficulty to adapt in new culture. My childhood was in cast system and I learned such
environment where people look differently to same culture people but I learned from Zaltina that
Brazilian mix with other culture people and accept their language as official language. They do
not have cast system but they have class system which differentiated between privilege and nonprivilege group. Over all I learned that human life is such as unfinished mud everyone need to
change his/her life style according to time and circumstances.
