All Educators, permanent and relief staff, will be made aware of this policy regarding adequate and
Kind#regards,#
responsible supervision
of children during their staff induction.
Staff shifts and routines will at all times provide for enough staff to be available for the adequate
supervision of children.

At no time will students,
volunteers, or persons employed under the age of 18 years be included in the
ratio of adults supervising children.

Students, volunteers and persons employed under the age of 18 years, will never be left alone with a
child or a group of children.
In any situation where adequate supervision of children is compromised, any educator/staff member
on crib or lunch breaks must be prepared to be recalled to perform this function.
Parents will be reminded regularly about the importance of keeping gates and doors closed.

INDOORS
Educators/staff will provide supervision at all times children are indoors.
Supervising Educators/Staff should give their attention to the children and not to other duties.
When children are resting or sleeping they will be supervised at all times having regard to their ages
and physical and intellectual development. Educators/staff will ensure that all sleeping children are
within hearing range and observed.
During hand washing and/or toilet times children will be supervised in the bathroom area.
Toddlers and children undergoing toilet training will not be left unsupervised in the bathroom.
No child is to be left unattended at the table when eating.
Section 3 - Child Policies

OUTDOORS
Educators/staff will provide supervision at all times children are outdoors.
Where one Educator/staff leaves their post, they must wait until a replacement Educator/staff member
is outdoors, before going leaving.
When supervising outdoors, Educators/staff will position themselves in accordance with the Services
Outdoor Supervision Plan - designed to maximise the view of the play area while focussing on
educators/staff being present in higher risk play areas and within sight of the front entry gate.
The educator positioned closest to, and within sight of, the entry gate must monitor movement
through the gate (checking specifically for unfamiliar faces and that children leaving are with adults
authorised to collect them).
At no time should children be present/ playing on the concreted area (between the preschool front
door and the main playground). Children must be escorted by educators across this area for the
purposes of routine transitions and toilet visits.
Where there is any water activity provided, one educator/staff member will supervise this area at all
times.
Except for brief discussions or concerns regarding children or matters relating to the service,
Educators/staff will not congregate outside.

GENERAL SUPERVISION PROCEDURES

Additional procedures are implemented by Educators/Staff to maximise supervision and to ensure
that all children are supervised and accounted for at all times of the day. These include:
- regular checks of the childrens attendance records for the purpose of ascertaining the total numbers
for each day. These will be conducted each morning before morning tea time (children present but
not signed in will be highlighted, children absent will be marked with an A). The time and number of
children will be noted at the bottom of the record and the educator will initial the record.
- the above procedure should also be followed when educators finish their shift and check that child
numbers are in line with regulatory requirements. If not, then educators will stay until such time as
they are and add overtime hours to their attendance record.
- head counts will be conducted throughout the day at the following times (but not limited to):
* going outside
* coming inside
* mealtimes
* rest time
- All internal doors and cupboards fitted with child-proof locks are to remain properly locked at all
times when not in use
- kitchen door to be strictly closed when not in use
- side gate completely locked at all times
- once all children have returned indoors and are seated for lunch one educator returns to the
playground to check that no children remain outdoors
- when outdoors children will visit the toilet in groups accompanied by an educator
- educators will adhere to the supervision plan when supervising outdoor play
- when indoors the preschool room will maintain optimal levels of supervision by ensuring educators
are spread out. When three educators are in attendance they will divide themselves as follows:
carpeted area, table play area, art area. When two educators are in attendance they will divide
themselves as follows: carpeted area/table area, art area
- if chairs are placed outside the nappy change room for waiting children they must be removed to
prevent children from climbing and opening the lock themselves
- in the afternoon the sandpit is closed before the time when only two educators remain in direct
contact with children. This reduces the play area and enables the two essential supervision
positions to be manned properly and without a major distraction.
Section 3 - Child Policies

The Approved Provider/Nominated Supervisor will ensure that this policy is maintained and
implemented at all times.
