Section Four:
Alignment to Curriculum & Professional Standards

Introduction
Curriculum and professional standards are vital in education in order to keep teachers on
track and to enforce ethics for teachers to adhere to while teaching the curriculum. Without
standards in place there would be no uniformity in the teaching profession and students would be
learning topics based on their teachers interest rather than a standardized curriculum base. To
make the world a level playing field for students upon graduation there must be curriculum
standards so that students are taught the same subject matter and have an equal opportunity to
succeed. Eligibility for University and college admission is partially determined by grade point
average and there is an assumption that the marks reflect the same level of education.
Curriculum standards act as an assurance that students will be graduating with the same
knowledge base.

Curriculum & Professional Educational Standards

INTASC Standards
INTASC standards maintain consistency for the learner and their learning. They provide
guidelines with respect to content, planning, instructional practice, assessment and professional
responsibility. It is a teachers responsibility to create a safe and supportive learning
environment which promotes learning. To do this successfully teachers must engage in ongoing,
meaningful professional learning which promotes a continuous cycle of self-improvement.
Professional standards help guide teachers along this continuous learning path as well as
providing a code of ethics to adhere to.

P-12 NYS Common Core Learning Standards for ELA, Math and Social Studies
The NYS Common Core Learning Standards provide guidance to teachers for teaching
ELA, math and social studies. This guide is used to maintain uniformity across the education
sector. It aids teachers and provides them with ideas for teaching these subject areas. This
ensures uniformed learning and assessment which creates a level playing field for all students
which is important now because of the competition involved with securing a place in higher
education institutions.

Conclusion
Curriculum and professional standards are important guides for educators in the
educational system today. In order to maintain consistency in education across grade levels
province wide curriculum standards are necessary as a guide for teachers. Professional standards
ensure a certain level of morals and ethics are maintained throughout the educational system.
You wouldnt want teachers showing up for work in short shirts and short shorts! Professional
standards describe the knowledge, skills and values held by teachers in the educational system as
well as providing guidance with respect to dress code, code of conduct etc. Both curriculum and
professional standards are vital to the effective and proper functioning of todays educational
system.
