COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Food science integrates many branches of science and relies on the application of the rapid advances in
technology to expand and improve the food supply. Students will evaluate the effects of processing,
preparation, and storage on the quality, safety, wholesomeness, and nutritive value of foods. Building on
information learned in Nutrition and Wellness and Chemistry, this course illustrates scientific
principles in an applied context, exposing student to the wonders of the scientific world. Related
careers will be explored.
This is the 3rd course of the Nutrition and Food Science Pathway
(can be used as a science credit)
I.

EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENT/PARTICIPATION/BEHAVIOR:
EXPECTATIONS FOR STUDENT PERFORMANCE
Students will be expected to meet the course standards listed below and be able to demonstrate their
understanding of the underlying concepts. This course will require the completion of both in-class and out of class
projects. In addition, this course will be based upon extensive use of science, social sciences, mathematics,
language arts, and computer technology.
EXPECTATIONS FOR STUDENT BEHAVIOR
School policies and procedures will be followed. Specific classroom guidelines are on the CLASSROOM POLICES.
The instructor reserves the right to modify the policies if the need arises. Parents may contact the instructor
through e-mail or by leaving a message with the school receptionist and the instructor will contact the parents
within 24 hours.
HALL PASSES AND BATHROOM PASSES: Please limit the number of times you ask to leave class.

ACADEMIC HONESTY
CHEATING is passing off someone elses work as your own. Cheating on daily work will result in a zero and the
student will not be allowed to make up the work. The student who knowingly gives the work to another to copy is
also cheating and will also receive a zero for the assignment. If a student is caught cheating on a quiz or test, the
student will retake the test before or after school on a date assigned at the convenience of the teacher. The
make up test will be a different format and will usually be essay format. Career Projects, research papers and
other projects become the property of the instructor and are not returned.

REQUIRED STUDENT PRODUCTS:


Students will be required to turn in the following activities over the course of the semester: Daily assignment
activities, essays, homework activities, menus, article reports, career research power point, and community service
(decided by the class) projects/products. Other products may be assigned, as the instructor deems appropriate.

REQUIRED READINGS.
Readings may come from the text book, magazine articles, related pamphlets and brochures and internet web sites.
Student will either answer specific questions on the reading or write summaries and reflections on the reading.

ANTICIPATED TEACHING METHODS:


A variety of teaching strategies including lecture, demonstrations, videos, group work, laboratory experiences,
computer activities and class projects will be used to teach the skills and knowledge necessary to meet the goals
for this class. Homework is an important component of the class and will be assigned approximately twice a week.
Homework consists of completing long-term assignments and reviewing the class work on a daily basis. Textbook
assignments, newspaper articles, magazine articles will be assigned.

Students will be expected to confer with area businesses and community resource people to research
community problems and solutions and obtain information to complete projects and activities. In addition,
students will be required to develop employability skills through applying and interviewing with local businesses.
Business and community resources will also be used as guest speakers and as partners in community service
activities.

Homework Policy: Assigned work is expected to be completed and submitted by the due date. Late work will not be accepted
for credit. In the case of an excused absence make up work will be accepted for full credit, however it is the students
responsibility to make arrangements to obtain this work and confirm make-up time with teacher. Generally, you will have one day
for each excused absence.

Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is the student leadership organization paired with this course. It
is the only student organization with family as the focus. Students learn to assume leadership roles as they plan and carry out
school and community projects.

Public Relations Policy: Students may be photographed or videotaped during the course of the year for promotion of program,
instructional purposes or public relations.
