To whom this may concern:

It is with great pleasure that I submit my application package in consideration for a placement on the Toronto District School
Board long term occasional list. I have a strong academic research background with a special interest in numeracy focussed on
using communication in mathematics to teach for understanding. In addition, I have completed the Special Education (Part 1)
Additional Qualification course during the spring of 2014, in order to further my skills and knowledge and grow as an educator.
I have had, and look forward to gaining many more opportunities to work in the diverse learning communities of the Toronto
District School Board.
Having done much research in the area of student discourse in mathematics, I know that communication plays an important role
in the written curriculum and also in the hidden curriculum. It helps to build students confidence, leadership, teamwork and
social skills, and consolidate their knowledge of the world around them. As a teacher, I am dedicated to facilitating students
learning through discourse, and work towards building positive cultures within and outside of the classroom community.
Incorporating technology into the classroom is a practice that can promote communication and is important to the success of our
students growing up in an age encompassed by digital technologies. In my practice I seek out new ways to incorporate
technology as a way to redefine my teaching and students learning. I provide cross-curricular opportunities for students to
interact with technologies in both social and physical aspects, which allow students to communicate socially and share activities
with peers and communities from around the world.
Because of my own love of extracurricular activities, I understand the value added to students and school communities that
engage students in activities that extend beyond the classroom. It is important to me that I engage students in extracurricular
activities which encourages communication in the wider communities and provide increased opportunities to build leadership,
teamwork and collaboration skills. I have been involved in coaching badminton at Brian PS while completing an LTO
assignment, playing and facilitating rugby at Cardinal Newman Catholic Secondary School, and supervising the Karate Kids
Club at Roden Junior PS. I am excited to offer my strengths and experiences in new situations.
Throughout my teaching experiences, many colleagues have spoken highly about my enthusiasm, professionalism and abilities
to work in teams and as a collaborative team player, whether it be working with teachers, parents, administration, students or
other members of the community. I have and will continue to collaborate with those around me to gain greater resources and
inform my practice. My goal is to continuously enhance my teaching and seek out more engaging ways to provide equity,
accessibility to education, and engaged learning for all students through differentiated instruction, no matter their diverse needs
and abilities.
My previous teaching assignments combined with my kindergarten LTO assignment at Brian PS have prepared me to become
an educator who values social justice, communication, patience, dedication, motivation and collaboration among teachers,
students and parents within and outside the school community. My goal is to be a positive role model for all my students. I will
work to provide them with the knowledge, skills, values, tools and confidence that they will need in order to realize their full
potential and grow to become responsible members of society. I believe that my strong communication skills, passion and
determination will assist me to make a difference as an educator for the diverse and growing Toronto District School Board
student community.
I look forward to meeting with you to discuss the possibility of joining the LTO list. I can be contacted at home at (416) 2612463 or by cell at (647) 455-1858 for any further information or interview purposes. Thank you for your time and
consideration.
Sincerely,
Marylina Serio
