FUNDAMENTAL DUTIES

PART IV-A
ARTICLE 51(A)
The original constitution did not contain fundamental duties
These duties inserted under part IV-A in article 51(A)
These were incorporated in the constitution on the Swaran Singh Committee
recommendations by 42nd Amendment Act 1976
The fundamental duties in the Indian constitution are inspired by the Constitution of

erstwhile USSR Constitution.

In 1976 there were 10 Fundamental Duties only


86th Constitutional Amendment act added one more duty

Features of the Fundamental Duties

Every year 3rd January is celebrated as Fundamental Duties Day

These are non-justiciable

Some of them are moral and other are civic duties

These are confined to citizens only and do not extend to foreigners

List of Fundamental Duties:

1. To be abide by the constitution and respect National flag and National Anthem

2. To develop scientific temper, humanism


3. To protect and improve the natural environment
4. To defend the country and render national service when called up on do so
5. To follow noble ideals that inspired the National struggle for freedom
6. To safe guard public property
7. To value and preserve the heritage of the country
8. To promote harmony and sprit of common brother hood amongst all the people of
India
9. To strive toward excellence in all spheres of individual
10.To uphold and protect the sovereignty unity and integrity of India.

FUNDAMENTAL DUTIES
11.To provide opportunities for education to his child or ward between the age of six

and fourteen years. ( Added by 86th Amendment act 2002)
