This traditional vratha is at present performed by women of Kerala only on a single day (Ardra vrath) in
the month of Dhanu (Sagittarius). Women of Tamil Nad still follow the traditional 30 day celebration , singing
one hymn from Thiruppavai on each day and all the 30 on the 30th day ,and finishingthe vratha on the
Ardra asterism. In the Brahmin and Nair families of Kerala Ardra Jagaran vrath is associated with chewing
108 Thamboola leaves(piper) , wearing flowers at midnight hour (Pathiraappoo) and swinging on decorated
swings,singing and dancing clapping hands and eating specially made food preparations on Ardra day.
The custom of celebrating 30 days of Vratha , starting from the Karthika asterism on fullmoon day ( when
sun is in Scorpio and moon in Aries/Taurus Rasi , and ending it on the next fullmoon day (Ardra asterism
when sun is in Sagittarius and moon in Gemini) and making the 27th day as a special day (since moon
finishes a circle around earth with 27/28 days) shows that even during Mahabharatha and Bhagavatha
days when Krishna and Vyasa lived ( almost same as Mohenjo Daro /Harappan times according to the
Indian calendar) Indians were aware of lunisolar time reckoning and movements of our planet earth around
the sun. Still in the temples of India the Lunisolar calendar is followed for festivals and in this way the
traditional knowledge systems (TKS) survive to some extend.
This is an attempt to introduce the ancient culture of South Indian Tamils , and its spiritual significance to
Malayalam speaking Indians who are not much familiar with the Tamil work of Andaal.
