ItwasjustalittleovertwoyearsagowhenDavidVerdesi(alsoknownasDavidShen)broughtasmallgroupofhisstudents,12inall
toDalianChinatospendanincredible10daysinfrontofthismodernTaoistWizard.Thiswasaseminalexperienceforme,andfor
everyonepresent.Thismanisalivingmasterineverysenseoftheword,notinthedegradedsenseinwhichitissooftenmisusedin
theWest.
Davidhadexplainedbeforehandthattofullyabsorbhisteachingalreadyrequiredafoundationofpracticebeyondmostmodernpeople.
Conceptualization,impatienceandunrealisticexpectationsaremajorstumblingblocks.DavidhadbeenstudyingwithWLPforthreefull
yearspriortohisinvitingthissmallgroupofhisstudentstosharehisexperience
Theexperiencewasatonceuncomfortable(tobekind,itwasactuallyexcruciating)forreasonsexplainedbelow,andinspirationalina
waydifficulttoconveyinwords.Onepartoftheteachingandmeditativeexperienceisthemaster'sapplicationof'yali'(mypinyin
sucks)or'pressure'.Nomatterwhatyourmeditativepracticewaspriortothatexperience,youcouldnotbepreparedforthis.
ThepracticewasmorelikeamilitarydrillthanwhatonemightexpectsittinginfrontofaTaoistMaster.Therewasbrieftheory,some
illustrationandafewquestionstranslatedbythetranslator(possiblythelocalcommunistcadrekeepinganeyeonthings),andthen
intoquietsitting,followingorders.Simpleobedienceisabigthing,andabsolutelymotionlesssittingfor4550minutesastrict
requirement.And,afterafewminutesof'settling',thepainbegins.TheMaster'spressurehastheimmediateeffectofpushingthechi
downintothelegs,andiftheyarenotalreadynumb,numbnessisthebestyoucanhopefor.Thesensationisdefinitelyofpressure,
liketheskypushingdownonsomeinnerpartofyou.Withabriefwarninghewould'turnupthepressure',smallincrementsatatime
untilitwasasecondbysecondexperiencetostandagainstit.Nowaytofallintoinattentionordrowsiness,butacontinuousactofwill
notto'break'.Intheclosingminutes,againwithaspokenwarning,andtheendinsight,againhewouldupthepressure,creatinga
sensationformelikemylegswereabouttoexplode,themeridianssplatteredovermycompanionsintheroom.Andthen,theawaited
words'practiceover',andinstantlythepressurewoulddisappearasifitwasasimplyimagination.Themostamazingthingofall.In30
seconds,youwerelongingforthatsomething,caringtorturefromtheMaster,toreturn.
AfewweekslaterIwasabletoexperiencethetrueforceofthisfieldeffectmyself.Iwasstayinganearbyapartmentbuilding500
metersorsofromwhereWLPandDavidwerehavingaprivatesession.Iknewofthetimingofthesesessionsandusuallytookthat
timetodosomequietsittingmyself.OnseveraloccasionsIwasalsosubjectedtothe'pressure'evenatthatdistance.Icould
accuratelyreporttoDavidwhetherthesessionhadinvolvedsittingandtheapplicationofthisfield,includinganestimateoftheamount
offorceapplied.IexpecttheintensityoftheforcewassignificantlygreaterforDavid'sbenefit,perhapsmakingiteasierformeto
detect.
