Eagleton: The rise of Enlgish

In eighteen century England, literature was considered to be the

standards of polite letter, which gives tastes of the upper class. After
civil war, literature became more important to bring peace between
middle class and upper class.
Modern literature came around nineteenth century during the
Romantic period. The idea that literature was imaginative or inventive
was a new concept in history. During Romantic period literature such as
poetry had significant social, political and philosophical indication
(mane Romantic period er somai literure ke new concept hisabe dhora
hoto history te jeita imaginative aar inventive chilo.. Romantic erar
somai poetry te social, political aar philosophical er provab chilo).
Literature is an ideology. Eagleton suggests that the growth of English
studies came later in nineteenth century, which caused by failure of
religion at the time. English literature became the new way of bringing
peace between middle class and the working class. It gave people a
new way to experience things or events that were not possible in real
life.
Since English was not considered as a real subject, they were only
offered to ladies in colleges but as the time went by English were also
offered to the men. It still took a while for study of English was taken
seriously but it became popular after the war.
Literature was the only place where creative language was developed.
Those who were studying literature felt that they were part of a
movement to bring back civilization the way it should have been back
in the seventeenth century (mane jara literature study korchilo tara
mone korchilo je tara ekta boro movement er ongso chilo jeita
civilization ke sothik dike nie jachilo thik ager moton jerokhum
seventeen century te chilo).
Eagleton also said back than the Scrutiny project made children to
learn about corrupt cultures instead of memorizing pointless passages
of literature and the Scrutiny project was stupid and controversial.
Back than some types of English were considered more English than
others. When T.S. Eliot came to England, he gave Poets and Dramatists
higher status in the society. Eliot felt that the poet must develop new
type of language in poetry which would speak to peoples senses rather
than their brain.
