Students will strengthen their ability to communicate effectively through reading, writing and
speaking. They will read and respond to various genres of literature; they will demonstrate their
understanding by recalling details, identifying main ideas and supporting information as well as
drawing conclusions. We will work to strengthen their writing mechanics, grammar skills and
develop their vocabulary repertoire. They will also build confidence in public speaking through
discussion and presentation opportunities. Finally, they will relate and apply what they have
learned from our readings and discussions to situations that are meaningful and relevant to their
lives. We will also integrate aspects of religion, math, science, and technology into our language
arts curriculum.

Students will be assessed in various ways, including but not limited to the following: frequent
written and/or verbal checks for understanding, projects/activities, presentations, quizzes/tests,
literature circles, and observation. The following weights are in place:
