The 7th grade social studies course focuses on geography, world history, and cultures. The teacher's approach is to help students understand how history connects the past to the present and future. Mrs. Adair margot.adair@maryknollschool.org 7th Grade Social Studies focuses on geography, the history of the world and the cultures that exist within it. However, history is not really about the old days, or long, long, ago. History is in the making! We are living in historic times! Social Studies can become fascinating once we realize were connected to all aspects of it. My approach to Social Studies and history is simple. Its life then and now! We must understand our past: from where we have come, in order to appreciate what we have today. Understanding world history is also essential to comprehending current events and contemporary issues. With our acquired knowledge we can then chart the future we want for ourselves, and our posterity! This course is heavily integrated with Language Arts to enhance student understanding of the material while improving their ability to communicate their newly acquired knowledge. Social Studies will be integrated with other subjects whenever possible. Social Studies Content: Geography o 5 Themes, Latitude/Longitude, Physical features, Maps o Human: Population (demographics), migration o Culture o Economic Systems o Political/Government Systems Modern History of Hawaii Medieval History o Byzantine and Muslim Civilizations, and Islam o African Kingdoms o The Americas Central, South and North o Asia China, Japan, and India o Medieval Europe and the Middle Ages o The Renaissance/Reformation - A New Age in Europe Students will be assessed in various ways including but not limited to the following: frequent written and/or verbal checks for understanding, research, projects/activities and presentations, quizzes/tests and observation.
