What is analytics?
Analytics is information resulting from the systematic analysis of data
and statistics. In simple terms, it is the information you get when you gather
data and study it. An example would be a survey about a class recollection.
People collect data from that survey and analyze it. From there, we get
information.
Most of the times, acquired information is used for improving something
or providing better service. Going back to the previous example, once
information is gained from the survey, the organizers can now improve next
years recollection.
What is Learning Analytics?
Analytics can be very useful and can be used in a variety of ways. It
can be used for business (business analytics) and even in websites (web
analytics).
Now another way to utilize analytics is in education. We call this as
learning analytics. It started gaining popularity when e-learning and online
courses started to become widely-used. What it does is simply collect data
from students in an online environment. These data can now be studied and
analyzed by teachers so that they can understand student patterns and
behaviors. With this information, they can improve their methods and
curriculum to fit their students needs.

What data does it collect?

This can vary according to which program or application is used. But
here are the most common data they collect. They record scores from online
submissions and tests, including class averages and overviews. It can also
keep track of test durations and even student log-in frequency. Teachers can
also pin-point areas of weakness based on online tests easier. They also get
an idea of teaching methods that works best with a group of students (e.g.
video tutorials, educational games).
Some of examples of these are Genyo, which is used by Miriam
College, Blackboard, and Klass Data.
Learning analytics helps teachers understand digital footprints. It is
powerful enough to tell a students study habits and predict his/her
performance. At the end of the day, this information will help improve the
learning environment.
What are the benefits?
Key beneficiaries would be institutional administrators, individual
learners, and teachers.
Administrators can get information based on learning analytics
especially in curriculum making. It can give them ideas about how courses
can be effective.
Meanwhile, individual learners will have the more direct benefit simply
because the main reason educators use learning analytics is for them.
Additionally, some learning analytics programs actually provide a progress
report to students to update them on how theyre doing so they know what
to improve on.
Teachers, on the other hand, can now engage better discussion and
instruction with students. They know which approaches work, such as video
tutorials or interactive games.
Why is it important?
Learning analytics can predict a students performance based on
current data. This allows teachers to plan lessons ahead of time better. It
also allows teachers to personalize teaching based on a students needs.
Additionally, it can even improve future online courses, which is important
considering the growth of the e-learning market.
