Natural Pools or Natural Swimming Ponds (NSPs)

Let nature clean the water...

Chemical-free water garden and swimming pool. The plant portion, or regeneration
zone, is separated from the swimming area by the wall seen a few inches below the
waters surface. www.naturalswimmingpools.com
(http://www.naturalswimmingpools.com/aboutus.htm)

The pools have skimmers and pumps that circulate the water through the regeneration
zone and back into the swimming area. The aquatic plants lter out contaminants and
use nutrients from the water as food which helps prevent algae. Then rocks, such as
granite river rock or haydite, to which friendly bacteria attach, act as biological lters.

There are many options as to design. Benecial bacteria (micro-organisms and

microbes) colonize the rock and help cleanse the water. www.clear-water-revival.com

A gradual slope contains the plants, gravel and loamy sand, a wall keeps them separate
from the swimming area.

Vacuum but twice a year and tend to the plants as needed. The plants will need to be
cut back in the fall so they do not die in the pool. www.naturalswimmingpools.com

The regeneration zone can be along the perimeter of a natural pool or a pond unto itself
but connected to the swimming area. www.gartenart.co.uk

For a true natural pool with no help from ultraviolet light or other such technology, the
requirement is half swimming area, half regeneration area. www.biotop-naturalpool.com (http://www.biotop-natural-pool.com/der_naturteich.html)

A hybrid natural pool usually has two circulation pumps. One where water is circulated
through the plant and rock lters before being discharged back to the bottom of the
pond. The second surface circulation system pulls water through one or two skimmers
ltering out oating debris. Water drawn through the skimmers passes through some
type of lter system, such as a UV lter and/or a biolteressentially a box lled with
bacteria-laden bio-mediabefore returning to the pool. A waterfall helps with
oxygenation. South Africa: www.naturalswimmingpools.co.za

Plants instead of chemicals -- have you ever thought about how many pounds of
chemicals go into a typical swimming pool?
Plants: A range of aquatic plants are used -- submerged (oxygenators), oating,
shallow marginals, deep marginals, bog/marsh and waterside species. Whenever
possible, it is best to use indigenous plants. Some examples of typical water plants:
cattails, bulrushes, sedges, duckweed and water lilies.

This does not have to be so complicated. I installed a wetlands filter in my Koi pond 17 years ago and the
pond is as clear as tap water. I have large Koi, some over 30" and as one would suspect, they product a
considerable amount of waste. The natural wetlands filter works perfectly and there is NO maintenance.
My fish pond is 14' x 17' and 4 feet deep so I am confident that this would work perfectly for a larger body
of water.

I have a question about the filtration system in the regeneration area is the system available or can it be
made with PVC pipe? I was thinking of doing a concrete pour with drainage trays you would use in a
driveway and running PVC conduit to pump station via manifold. Will this work or is there a different
system under the stone?

Of course it would work. But can you afford it? Like one commenter said, when I win a $M, it'll be the first
thing I do. Add an aerator to the bottom, and you could have fishing, as well. Build it big enough, and you
could add a motor boat. Put in a big fan, and you could even sail a boat.
I suggest you go to a real lake or pond to swim, just like most people do. Get real.

Africa's tropical climate

Reply #91 on : Mon June 16, 2014, 15:28:30

Hi
We are building a house in the equatorial region of Africa in the tropical rain-forest. As we are trying to
maintain the biodiversity of this area, we would like to build our own water reservoir/natural swimming
pool. However I'm concerned about that the temperature will be too high for us to take a dip in it. Would
planting trees in tree-islands and around help or is it failed attempt already?
Any suggestions are gratefully appreciated.

Establishing pond
Reply #83 on : Mon December 16, 2013, 06:18:16

Please if you can help me with some advice. At the moment I try to arrange the garden. I also want to set
up a pond. Specifically that the land is sloping and on the slope have lake . Pond at the moment is filled
with small natural spring water and has a depth of 0.5 m I want to dig to a depth of 2 m is also filled with
mace . Wonder if there sap springs give even more ? Pond being in the slope when it rains very hard
water in the yard is it possible to drain even if terrace land . My idea would be to do it in a more natural ,
without PVC film or membrane and structure it with natural stone and sand on the bottom and the sides of
stone rock . I think that the film becomes unsightly with time and in case of leaks in the pond can not be
filed only on the bottom and no filters anywhere. Maybe there is the possibility of draining the lake in
summer , spring flow depends here I need to check . But that would be the ideal solution ? I'd go with the

100 % natural . How do you advise me ?

Removal of Dirt on bottom.

Reply #80 on : Sat August 31, 2013, 23:22:54

We have a large swimming pond with a concrete like bottom. Above we have the plants, waterfall and
bubbler in the main swimming pond. It sounds like a lot has been done right. However, the bottom has
probably a foot of mud like dirt and muck. How do I get this out of the bottom? We have used a net to
remove it from the shallow ends, but there is too much in the deep end and the nets are not strong
enough anyhow to withstand the weight. Please help with any advise.

These companies use the same copycat technology. What you missed in your photos are the most
natural ponds I've seen. Since we aren't allowed to use links here, try doing a search for natural ponds
lakes and streams by spring creek aquatic concepts. There you will see what you really desire. Their
ponds seem cleaner and a lot more natural appearing. It could be because they are actual Biologists.

Natural Pools

Reply #76 on : Sat August 03, 2013, 13:45:14

A Natural Swimming Pool can be built in any climate that water and aquatic plants coexist. Use the plants
that are native to your area and you will have a healthy regeneration area. Providing that it is designed
and built right.

For what seems like a year I've been searching for some kind of instructions that would tell me how I can
convert my built in cement pool into a bio friendly pond, chemical free. Everybody wants to sell you the
instructions. I don't have the money to pay everyone for info that doesn't tell me anything more then what
I can see and guess from web photo's. There are not that many naturists left in the world I guess, that just
want to share the love because it's the right thing to do for the environment. Anyone have a suggestion, a
link, a video, something that will tell me things like: will I need to raise the level of my pool or what plant
are the best for natural algee filtration.

I have an indoor pool, but really hoped to put in a lap pool outside. This would be a terrific way to do this.
We would probably need a separate pond to satisfy the lovely Blue Herons, but that can be easily done.
All would be in keeping with the natural and green place we are fortunate to have, and add to our sons'
inheritance and love of this wooded and field place where they have grown.
