Course Description: Algebra 1 Honors is a high school graduation requirement. BMV provides
this course for mathematically advanced Upper School students. Algebra is the study of
expressions, equations, functions and inequalities. Students will solve linear equations, use
proportional reasoning, graph relations and functions, analyze linear equations solve linear
inequalities and systems of linear equations and inequalities, explore polynomials and
quadratic/exponential functions. They will also explore rational and radical expressions and
equations.
Course Content:
The course is divided into the following units of study:
Equations
Inequalities
Linear Functions
Function Basics
Systems of Equations and Inequalities
Exponential Functions
Quadratic and Polynomial Functions
Exponents and Polynomials
Factoring Polynomials
Quadratic Functions and Equations
Other Functions (Radical, Rational, Cube Root, Inverse,)
Data Analysis, Statistics and Modeling
Credit: Beginning with the 2013-2014 school year, to earn high school credit for Algebra 1
Honors, a middle grades student must take and pass the statewide, standardized Algebra EOC
(End of Course) assessment, which constitutes 30% of the students final course grade, and earn
a passing grade in the course. Students successfully completing this course and passing the EOC
are eligible for one high school credit with a quality point for honors. For example, earning an
A in the course translates to a 5.0 grade point average (GPA) instead of a 4.0 GPA.
Grading:
Tests: 55%
Quizzes: 25%
Homework/ Classwork/ Other: 20%

Grading Scale:
90%-100% = A
87%-89% = B+
80%-86% = B
77%-79% = C+
70%-76% = C
67%-69% = D+
60%- 66% = D
59% and below = F
The midterm exam and final exam will each count as 25% of the respective semester grades.
Grades will be updated weekly on Pinnacle:

Classroom Instruction:
Students will work in collaborative groups on a regular basis and approach problems
conceptually. The only way students will master the concepts is by being actively involved in
their learning and preparing for classroom instruction before arriving each day. Students will be
asked to take notes on key concepts at home in order to preview each lesson. In this way,
students will arrive in class ready to use and apply the theorems, postulates, and definitions we
are studying. I will be responsible for guiding, supporting and summarizing at all times. Daily
assignments (mathematics exercises and note taking) will be given to support mastery of the
skills we have learned in class. Students will be provided with multiple resources (print and
electronic) to further their understanding while studying at home. Student Assessments will be
given within and at the end of each chapter. They will include multiple choice, short answer, and
extended response questions. This is a balanced program where skill development is based upon
conceptual understanding, problem solving, and effective communication.
Homework: In mathematics, in order to learn the skills, you must PRACTICE the skills. We will
spend time during class each day to discuss the homework and if you have completed work, it
will allow you to ask questions and seek clarification if needed. If you fall behind in your
homework, it will become very difficult to catch up. It is required for all students to show
work on every problem in Algebra 1 Honors in order to earn credit on formative and
summative assessments.
Assistance: Additional learning opportunities such as before school, after school, or elective
period tutoring will be available for students who need support.
Parent Involvement: Parents, the following suggestions will help students be successful and
have a positive experience in Algebra 1 Honors:
Encourage and support risk taking on homework and while working in groups.
Talk on a regular basis about the concepts being taught.
Encourage students to use their resources when having difficulty with homework.
Create an atmosphere at home where there is a designated study space and study time.

Be open to math groups working together at homes in evenings and weekends.

When students are asked to teach new concept to parents, be enthusiastic and attentive.
Offer help with homework and suggest that students get help at school when necessary.
Look through the algebra notebook on occasion and ask about organizational strategies.
If your student needs help, start by asking them to read the problem out loud.

Textbook: Holt McDougal Algebra 1 Common Core Edition

This textbook will issued to students for home use. Students are encouraged to access the etextbook as well as supplemental materials (tutorial videos, sample exercises, etc) online through
the Student Portal: http://beep.browardschools.com
Classroom Supplies: Please bring by Friday of the first week of school:
A composition notebook (NOT a spiral notebook, no perforated pages, for math ONLY)
Pencils, sharpened, with erasers
Pens (not erasable)
A 3-ring binder (approx. 1-1.5)
Graph paper
Lined filler paper
An EOC-compliant calculator for use on homework (we will use TI30Xa solar in class)
Attendance: Attendance is required in accordance with the 2014/15 BCPS Code of Student
Conduct Handbook.
Agendas: Students will be provided with an agenda to write down homework, school events and
reminders. Use of this agenda is expected daily so that students can keep track of their
assignments and due dates throughout all of their classes.
