KEY DATES

30th January 1933- Hitler appointed Chancellor of


Germany
27th Feb 1933- The Reichstag Fire
This was a very significant event, Communists
were blamed for for the fire and later arrested. The
communist leadership in the Reichstag was
eliminated. This gave way for Hitler and the Nazi
party to have clear majority in the Reichstag

Key Dates
5th March 1933- Nazi Party gained 44% of the
General Election vote
23rd March 1933- Enabling Act
This new law gave the government power for the
next four years.
This represented a change in the constitution
Hitler had now achieved dictatorial powers
It allowed the Nazi party to destroy any remaining
signs of German Democracy

Key Dates
June 30th 1934- The Night of the Long Knives
This event saw Hitler turn on some of his own
men. The SA (Brown Shirts) was the German
Assault Division, in the German Nazi Party. They
played a key role in Hitlers rise to power.
The SA would protect party meetings, terrorised
opponents and fought street battles.

Key Dates
Once Hitler had come to power he did not have
much use for the SA any longer. The SA had
strong internal leadership and Hitler felt
threatened.
Hitler using his new forces the SS division he
carried out an assassination on the SA leadership
killing dozens of SA men.
After this the SA reduced in size and no longer
interfered with political affairs.

Mission of indoctrinating the German people with
Nazi ideals
Created a positive image of Hitler and the Nazi
Party
Also focused on the enemy- e.g Jews
Appealed to emotions instead of intellect
March 1933- Joseph Goebbles- Minister of
Propaganda
Joseph was brilliant and innovative, his method was
to deliver the message in a grand and repetitive
way. This allowed people to stop questioning it and

The Nazi Party used Propaganda to preserve their Dictatorship
RADIO
They over took the National Radio- prevented people from
listening to foreign stations- 1939 it became a crime to
listen to foreign stations.
FILM
Large budget propaganda films for distribution in German
cinemas
NEWSPAPERS
Censorship of newspapers for the ones who remained in
Print. Nazi Party also created two papers of their own The
Peoples Observer and The Stormer
FESTIVALS and PARADES
Large spectacular parade which glorified the Nazi Party and
promoted their ideology- attendance often compulsory .

became redundant after the Enabling Act of 1933
