Lets read the selection from A Summer

Life by Gary Soto together.

Lets Review What

is characterization?
What is the difference between direct
and indirect characterization?
What are some methods an author can
use to indirectly characterize?

the author creates or
develops a character by
directly stating the
characters traits

the author creates or

develops a character by
showing a characters
personality through his or
her actions, thoughts,
feelings, words, and
appearance, or through
another characters
observations and reactions

direct characterization

indirect characterization

Create a chart with two

columns.
Label the left column:
Example of indirect
characterization
Label the right column:
Inference I can make about the
character based on the example

Example
Example of indirect
characterization
I knew enough about
hell to stop me from
stealing.

Inference I can make

about the character
based on the example
I can infer that the
narrator is from a
religious family.

Now complete the chart with a

partner by listing at least 3
examples of indirect
characterization and what you
can infer from each example.

Imagery
In my front yard, I leaned against a car
fender and panicked about stealing the
apple pie.
Is this line from the story an example of
imagery?

No!
While we may be able to imagine the
scene, there are neither
adjectives/adverbs nor a metaphor/simile
creating a controlling image that repeats
throughout the story.

IMAGERY
ONLY

things with adjectives/adverbs or metaphors/similes are

considered imagery!

Adjective-

a word that describes, identifies, modifies, or quantifies

something (a noun or a pronoun).
In the phrase, "theblackcat" the word black is an adjective because it
describes the cat.

Adverb-

used to modify verbs. They tell us when, where, how, in what

manner, or to what extent an action is performed. Many adverbs
end in ly. Some examples:
When: He ranyesterday.
Where: He ranhere.
How: He ranquickly.
In what manner: He ranbarefoot.
To what extent: He ranfastest.
Adverbs are also used to modify adjectives and other adverbs. For
example:
He's anextremelynice boy.
She can runextremely quickly.

IMAGERY

Metaphor-is a figure of speech which makes an implicit,

implied or hiddencomparisonbetween two things or objects
that are poles apart from each other but have some
characteristics common between them. In other words, a
resemblance of two contradictory or different objects is made
based on a single or some common characteristics.

Simile-a figure of speech that makes acomparison, showing

similarities between two different things. Unlike ametaphor,
a simile draws resemblance with the help of the words like
or as. Therefore, it is a direct comparison

Imagery
My face was sticky with guilt.
Is this line from the story an example of
imagery?

Yes!
The metaphor comparing the pie residue
on his face to guilt creates a controlling
image, one that we see throughout the
story, or the stickiness of guilt.
Sticky is also an adjective.

So that means
There are two types of imagery:
Descriptive Language:
adjectives/adverbs
2. Controlling Image: metaphors/similes
that create repeating images
1.

With a new partner,

1. Identify lines in the text that contain imagery.
a. Highlight descriptive language one color.
b. Highlight controlling images created by
metaphors/similes another color.
2. Choose the 4 most significant examples of imagery
from those you highlighted.
3. Create a chart that:
a. lists the 4 lines you chose
b. explains why those 4 images are significant.
c. attempts to interpret the symbolic meaning of the
imagery you chose. (In other words, explain
how Soto
uses those images to develop the theme.)
