1. Examine the sequence of letters in the torn piece of parchment. Complete the sequences
of letters.

2. For the four periodic 2-D patterns shown in the next page:
(a) These patterns contain lots of symmetry. Sketch in (using appropriate symmetry
symbols), as many symmetry elements as you can find in the pattern.
(b) Sketch on each pattern an array of points that represent the 2-D lattice on which
the pattern is based. Try to put the lattice points on symmetry element(s). (make
these points bold so that they are clearly visible).
(c) Connect the lattice points to define appropriate unit cells.
(d) Examine the parameters of the unit cell. Identify the specific 2-D lattice for each
of the patterns. Can you also identify the plane group (or 2D space group)?
3. Illustrate, graphically the point groups: (a) 2mm and (b) 3m.
4. Sketch the unit cells of the 2D lattices: (i) Oblique Lattice and (ii) Square Lattice.
(a) What is the minimum symmetry required in the above lattices.
(b) Show all the symmetry elements within the unit cells.
5. For the following motifs:
(i)

(ii)

(a) Sketch the symmetries for the above motifs.

(b) What is the point group in each case?
6. Add individually, the motifs in question (5) to the 2D lattices in question (4).
(a) Sketch all the 4 cases.
(b) Show the symmetries in the unit cell of the resulting 2-D crystal.
(c) What is the plane group (or 2D space group) in each case?
