Student group: Grade 3,4,5,6

Supervising Teacher: Teacher 1, 2 and School: Weeden Heights PS

3
Duration of the lesson: 60
Class size: 11 (7 & 4)
Title of lesson/activity: Exploring different reactions and changes of matter.
Intended Learning Outcomes:
G3&4 For students to start understand that physical changes can occur from
different elements such as heat, these changes are reversible.
G5&6 Students to understand that 2 materials mixed together can create a
different state of matter.
Prior Learning and Experiences:
First lesson allowed the teachers to use formative assessment to determine
students prior knowledge on matter; solids, liquids and gases.
Teaching Strategies:
Welcome 5 minutes whole group
Students will take in turn to answer the question what do you remember
from our first lesson? Can you give us an example of a gas/solid or liquid
Physical change 20 minutes whole group
The students will be asked to explore different ways they can make physical
changes to a piece of paper this could include; cutting, colouring or
scrunching. The teachers will not give the students explicit instructions about
what to do with the paper, this will allow students to use their imagination.
For the students who finish early there will be other materials available to
make physical changes to such as; crayons, Styrofoam cups and toothpicks.
1st group 25 minutes - Grade 3 & 4 The students will be split into 2 groups. The grade 3 & 4 group will conduct an
experiment which will look at changing matter into different states. The
materials changing will be chocolate from liquid to solid using heat (hairdryer).
The teacher will talk through safety with the students focusing on different
sources of heat and what we have to be weary of if performing this experiment
at home. The students will explore different ways of creating heat themselves
to melt the chocolate.
There will be 1 student who will either volunteer or be picked as reporter who
will take notes on first the discussion about predictions, second about the
discussion on different ways of melting chocolate that the students come up
with and then they will report this information back to the class.

2nd group 25 minutes grade 5 & 6

This group will run very much like the first group
Safety discussion
1 student chosen to be reporter
Discussion with whole group about predictions
The group will look at mixing baking soda and vinegar in a glass bottle with a
balloon attached to the top. The 2 materials together create carbon dioxide
which will fill the balloon.
The reporter will take notes and present them back to the class.
Class discussion 10 minutes whole class
The two groups will come back together to discuss the different predictions
and outcomes of the experiment. The discussion will conclude with what the
students have learnt during the lesson and what they have discovered from
exploration.

Resources, Materials and Organisation:

Pieces of paper
Materials to alter paper; scissors, pencils, textas.
Other materials to manipulate toothpicks, crayons, Styrofoam
cups.
Hairdryer
Chocolate (individually wrapped pieces)
Baking soda
Vinegar
Glass bottles
Balloons

Assessment:
Observations, discussions and reporter information. Reporters can use the
information from the experiments to create a representation of how each
concept works.
