Title

What makes a word? Phonics Word Recognition

Grade Level/Subject

3rd Grade English Language Arts

Overview of Lesson

The lesson will combine phonics skills with vocabulary, reading comprehension and
critical thinking to develop better reading fluency. Students will practice the basics of
3rd grade word recognition while reviewing vowel sounds using rhyme, building new
words, spelling and context. This particular lesson will specifically focus on suffixes
and prefixes. Students will learn what a suffix and prefix is and apply that meaning to
root words to make a new word. Eventually after mastering the basics of suffixes and
prefixes, students will complete sentences using the correct word with the prefix or
suffix.
