Standard A Reflection: I feel like I know and understand my students needs, but I am still getting
used to how to make online and blended learning curriculum flexible and fluid in regards to
student needs. I am in the process of creating an online literature circle and I can see that
though I should have an outline, creating the website too far out (time wise) could be a
determinant to myself and the students who participate. My focus needs to be on improving my
ability to provide quality online and blended instruction.
National Standards for Quality Online Teaching: Version 2 9
Standard B
The online teacher understands and is able to use a range of technologies, both existing and
emerging, that effectively support student learning and engagement in the online environment.

The online teacher plans, designs, and incorporates strategies to encourage active learning,
application, interaction, participation, and collaboration in the online environment.

Rating
The online teacher is able to use studentcentered instructional strategies that are
connected to real-world applications to
engage students in learning (e.g., peerbased learning, inquiry-based activities,
collaborative learning, discussion groups,
self-directed learning, case studies, small
group work, and guided design).
Standard C Reflection: I think that LEC assisted me in better understanding how to facilitate
online communication that is meaningful and scaffolded. This course created a model structure
for an online course that could be used in my own classroom. An area of focus for me will be to
better adjust my communication for the many perspectives of my students in an online learning
environment.
Standard D
The online teacher promotes student success through clear expectations, prompt responses, and
regular feedback.

Standard D Reflection: Until LEC, the idea of providing sample work online for students had not
occurred to me. In the independent study structure in which I work, students are given individual
and small group attention. Most written curriculum ( which is done for us but I am on the
department to write) work samples are not provided. In the online literature circle I am creating, I
have provided an example of each assignment I have created thus far. I will need to continue to
focus on and build skills in this area, especially giving my students clear expectations for their
work in an online learning environment.
Standard E
The online teacher models, guides, and encourages legal, ethical, and safe behavior related to
technology use.

Standard E Reflection: I like that through LEC I gained a clear understanding of how to cite
images etc. I have used this new knowledge in the creation of online coursework to be a role
model for my students. My area of focus in this standard should be to comply with FERPA
guidelines so I can ensure my online teaching complies with privacy standards.
Standard F
The online teacher is cognizant of the diversity of student academic needs and incorporates
accommodations into the online environment.

Standard G Reflection: I feel comfortable with creating and using many online assessment tools.
Currently as I create an online course, I do worry about some of the assessment tools I use
being in a Google doc in which student can change work of others within their group. Thinking
about this and assessing myself, I realize this is an area of the course I should change. My
area of focus should be using assessment tools that ensure validity and reliability.
Standard H
The online teacher develops and delivers assessments, projects, and assignments that meet
standards-based learning goals and assesses learning progress by measuring student achievement of
the learning goals.

Standard H Reflection: I learned a lot about meaningful assessments in this LEC course. I feel I
can create authentic assessments and have since beginning the course. I have begun an
online course in which I used MAP reading assessment data to determine literature circle roles
for students. My area of focus should be creating polls and surveys within an online learning
environment to help me understand student perceptions and their progress. I feel this would be
very useful.
Standard I
The online teacher demonstrates competency in using data from assessments and other data sources
to modify content and to guide student learning.

Standard I Reflection: I think self-reflection is key to any learning and have built in selfreflections within my online course. I do feel my weakest area here is time management with
online coursework and communication. The area I should focus on is management of online
tasks. Because students are not in front of you, the management of communication and
grading is even more demanding I feel than a traditional school teacher role. I use calendar
reminders to give me a set amount of time to communicate and grade.
Standard J
The online teacher interacts in a professional, effective manner with colleagues, parents, and other
members of the community to support students success.
