30/ Who sits on what thrones

Last updated 09/06/15 This study is seven pages long

Introduction
Some say that if Jesus is on God's throne then he is God, this study will show that not to be true.
This study will show that that God sits on the throne and so does Jesus, two of them, both of them, Jesus at God's
right hand. Because of this, this study will show clearly show that Jesus cannot be, and is not, God.

Supporting truths with scriptures

Part 1 Heaven is God's Throne

Usually when we picture a throne we think of a chair that King's and Queens might sit in, a grand chair in a large
palatial hall, on a stage or at the top of some very wide steps etc. This may be true, however the throne of God is
described in a different way.
Mathew 5:34 But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God,
35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King
Heaven is the throne of God
Mathew 23:21-22 And whoever swears by the temple swears by it and by him who dwells in it.
22 And whoever swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by him who sits upon it.
Heaven is the throne of God
Acts 7:48 Yet the Most High does not dwell in houses made by hands, as the prophet says,
49 Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What kind of house will you build for me, says the
Lord, or what is the place of my rest?
50 Did not my hand make all these things?
Heaven is God's throne
Summary:
Mathew 5:34 Heaven is the throne of God
Mathew 23:21 Heaven is the throne of God
Acts 7:48
Heaven is God's throne
All of heaven is God's throne.
There are other OT passages that talk about God's throne, however they do not detract from the fact that heaven is
God's throne.

Part 2 God sits on Gods throne:

God sits on His own throne
Revelation 3:21 To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I
overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne.
Jesus has a throne and God has a throne, we sit on Jesus throne, and Jesus sits on Gods throne, it is still Gods throne.
If, as other scriptures say, heaven is God's throne then these passages must be refering to an overall place in heaven
Revelation 7:15 Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple;
and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence.
Heaven is the throne of God.
God is in his temple
2 Samuel 22:7
Psalm 11:4
Psalm 18:6
Psalm 27:4-5
Isaiah 6:1-3
Habakkuk 2:20
Jonah 2:7

The LORD God is in His heavenly temple

The LORD is in His heavenly temple
The LORD God was in His temple
Inquire of the LORD in His temple
The train of Gods robe filled the temple
The LORD is in His holy temple
Jonahs prayer came to God in his temple

These passages show that God is in His temple, they are referring to heaven as 2 Samuel 22:7 says,
Summary:
Revelation 3:21
the Father is on His throne
Revelation 7:15
the throne of God
When God is said to be "sitting on His throne" or "in His temple" it is referring not to a chair or a building but to
His spiritual place in heaven. We can only speculate what that looks like.
We know that God is spirit and does not have a physical body and therefore does not physically sit down.

Part 3 Jesus sits on God's throne:

Jesus is with God on the throne.
Revelation 3:21 To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I
overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne.
God has a throne, Jesus has a throne and is sat on Gods throne. Disciples will sit on thrones.
Again this is just symbolic imagery for explaining places in heaven.
God and Jesus and disciples, the family of God
Revelation 5:13 And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and
all that is in them, saying, To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory
and might forever and ever!
"Him who sits on the throne" is God. The "lamb" is Jesus.
Jesus is with God in heaven, two of them.
Revelation 6:16 calling to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who is
seated on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb,

"him who is seated on the throne" is God.

"and from the wrath of the lamb" is Jesus.
Two of them in heaven.
Revelation 7:10 and crying out with a loud voice, Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and
to the Lamb!
"to our God who sits on the throne" is referring to God.
"and to the lamb" is referring to Jesus.
Two of them in heaven.
Revelation 7:17 For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; he will lead them to
springs of living water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes."
Jesus is at the center of the throne with God who will wipe away the tears.
Revelation 22:1-3 Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from
the throne of God and of the Lamb
2 through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve
kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
3 No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his
servants will worship him.
vs1 The throne of God, AND of the lamb. Two of them.
vs3 The throne of God AND of the lamb. Two of them, along with his servants.

Summary:
Revelation 3:21 God, Jesus and disciples are on thrones. This is just imagery for explaining places in heaven.
Revelation 5:13 "Him who sits on the throne" is God. The "lamb" is Jesus. Jesus is with God in heaven.
Revelation 6:16 God AND the lamb are on the throne, two of them
Revelation 7:10 God AND the lamb are in heaven, two of them
Revelation 7:17 Jesus is at the center of the throne with God who will wipe away the tears.
Revelation 22:1-3 The throne of God AND of the lamb. Two of them, along with his servants.
Jesus is on God's throne which means Jesus is with God in heaven. The throne is symbolic imagery for heaven.

Part 4 Jesus sits on Jesus' throne:

Jesus sits on Jesus' throne.
Mathew 19:28 Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits
on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve
tribes of Israel.
Jesus sits on his own glorious throne. This means, when Jesus is seen in his place in heaven on the Day of Judgment.
The text referring to the disciples is again imagery. It means that disciples will also have a place in heaven, which is
a place on the throne of God.
Mathew 25:31-32 When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit
on his glorious throne.
32 Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd

separates the sheep from the goats

vs31 We can only speculate what this means, it is pointing in some way to Jesus' place in heaven on or after the
Day of Judgment.
Summary:
Mathew 19:28 Jesus along with disicples will sit on their thrones, or have their own place in heaven
Mathew 25:31-32 Jesus will sit on his glorious throne, or have his glorious place in heaven.
These scriptures give us imagery of Jesus on his throne, or having his place in heaven.

Part 5 Jesus Sits on David's Throne

Jesus has a place on the throne of David
Acts 2:29-32 Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and
was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.
30 Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of
his descendants on his throne,
31 he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did
his flesh see corruption.
32 This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses.
Jesus is a descendant of David, God determined Jesus would have a place on the throne of David.
Luke 1:32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him
the throne of his father David,
Jesus was given the throne of the kingdom by God, who once gave the same throne to David.
God did not give the throne to himself he gave it to another.
Summary:
Acts 2:29-32 God determined Jesus would have a place on the throne of David.
Luke 1:32 Jesus was given the throne of David by God.
God gave Jesus a place on the throne of David
Jesus is not God if he needs a throne giving to him.

Part 6 Jesus Sits at the Right of the Throne of God:

Jesus is at the right hand of God.
Hebrews 8:1 The point of what we are saying is this: We do have such a high priest, who sat down at the
right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven,
Jesus the High Priest sat at the right hand of the throne.
If Jesus is God why does he sit at the right of the throne and not in the center?
Other scriptures say Jesus is sat at the center of the throne??
Perhaps the center and the right are close together, and dont have to be exact
Hebrews 12:1-2 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside
every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured

the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
vs2 Jesus is seated at the right hand of the throne of God
Summary:
Hebrews 8:1 Jesus is at the right hand of the throne of God
Hebrews 12:1-2 Jesus is seated at the right hand of the throne of God
Because these passages say Jesus is next to God it is very difficult to imagine that he is also God. Do some believe
that God is next to God and yet we have one God? Or is that two Gods?

Part 7 Disciples Will Sit on Thrones:

How do disciples sit on thrones?
Mathew 19:28 Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man
sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve
tribes of Israel.
Jesus sits on his own throne, Jesus has his place in heaven.
Some disciples will sit on twelve thrones in heaven, passing judgment on others.
Luke 22:29 And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, 30so that you may eat
and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
Confer: To grant as a possession, to bestow.
Jesus gives the kingdom to the disciples just as God had given it to Jesus.
The disciples are on thrones judging.
Revelation 3:21 To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I
overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne.
God has a throne, Jesus has a throne, Jesus is sat on Gods throne.
Disciples will sit on Jesus throne.
Imagery for our places in heaven
Summary:
Mathew 19:28 Some disciples will sit on twelve thrones in heaven, passing judgment on others.
Luke 22:29 Jesus gives the kingdom to the disciples just as God had given it to Jesus. The disciples sit on thrones.
Revelation 3:21 God has a throne, Jesus has a throne, Jesus is sat on Gods throne. Disciples will sit with them on
thrones.
Imagery for our places in heaven
The disciples are given a place on the throne, a place in heaven, just as Jesus was given the same things.

Part 8 God gave the Thrones to Jesus and the Disciples

We have already looked at these passages earlier, however I wanted to pull out a few of them that show God gives or
allows Jesus and the disciples to have a throne or a place in heaven. Because of this Jesus cannot be God.
Acts 2:29-32 Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and
was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.

30 Being therefore a prophet,

and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of
his descendants on his throne,
31 he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did
his flesh see corruption.
32 This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses.
Jesus is a descendant of David and that God determined Jesus would have a place on the throne of David.
Luke 1:32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him
the throne of his father David,
Jesus was given the throne by God who once gave the same throne to David.
God did not give the throne to himself he gave it to another.
How can Jesus be God and need a throne giving to him?
Revelation 7:10 and crying out with a loud voice, Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and
to the Lamb!
"to our God who sits on the throne" is referring to God.
"and to the lamb" is referring to Jesus.
God and Jesus, two of them in heaven giving people salvation
Summary:
Acts 2:29-32
Luke 1:32
Revelation 7:10
Revelation 22:1-3

God determined Jesus would have a place on the throne of David.

Jesus was given the throne by God who once gave the same throne to David.
God and Jesus, two of them in heaven giving people salvation
The throne of God AND of the lamb. Two of them, along with his servants.

That God gives the thrones to Jesus and the disciples means that God gives them a place with Him in heaven.
That God gives a place in heaven to Jesus means that Jesus is not God.

Part 9 Psalm 2 and Hebrews 1:8 Your throne o God

There are some that say that Hebrews 1:8 is quoting Psalm 2 it shows Jesus to be God. There is an in depth study on
this showing that Jesus is not God linked here
Summaries and Final Conclusion.
Part 1 All of heaven is God's throne.
Part 2 When God is said to be "sitting on His throne" or "in His temple" it is referring not to a building or
a chair but toHis spiritual place in heaven. We can only guess what that looks like.
We know that God is spirit and does not have a physical body and therefore does not physically sit
down.

Part 3 Jesus is on God's throne which means Jesus is with God in heaven. The throne is imagery for
heaven.
Part 4 These scriptures give us imagery of Jesus on his throne, having his place in heaven.
Part 5 God gave Jesus a place on the throne of David
Jesus is not God if he needs a throne giving to him.
Part 6 Because these passages say Jesus is next to God it is very difficult to imagine that he is also God.
Do some believe that God is next to God and yet we have one God? Or is that two Gods?
Part 7 The disciples are given a place on the throne, a place in heaven, just as Jesus was given the same
things.
Part 8 That God gives the thrones to Jesus and the disciples means that God gives them a place with Him
in heaven. That God gives a place in heaven to Jesus means that Jesus is not God.
Final Conclusion:
All of heaven is God's throne, the throne of God is heaven. When God is said to be on his throne, or in His temple, it
means he is in heaven in His place of authority.
Jesus is also on God's throne with God, Jesus has a place in heaven with God. This place in heaven was given to him
by God who will also give disciples a similar place. These passages are all symbolic imagery for places of authority.
The entire idea that Jesus was given his place with God is clear evidence that Jesus is not God.
If Jesus were God the wording would be very different.
