Hats on for fund-raising event

BRITT - Hats can't be worn during the school
day at West Hancock High School, but for
‘one dollar on Friday, students can wear them.
The high school pep club is raising money for
the non-profit group Love Your Melon. It's an
organization that provides hats for kids being
treated for cancer. West Hancock graduate
Melissa Miller is an lowa ambassador for
Love Your Melon. The organization got its
name becausé those being treated for cancer
often lose their hair. A head without hair is referred to as a melon,
Pep club members Alyssa Tegtmeyer and Cassie Engstler said a hat-wearing fundraiser is
an appropriate way to raise money for Love Your Melon.
“It’s perfect," Miller said. "I'm really happy they picked up on it."
"This shows support for people in our community who have cancer and those who know
people that do," Tegtmeyer said.
Miller successfully had Gov. Terry Branstad name Oct. 22 as Love Your Melon Day. Miller
is a student at the University of Northern lowa in Cedar Falls. She planned a variety of
activities on and off campus for Oct. 22.
Miller-also-invited- West Hancock High School to support Love-Your Melon.
Pep club member Danni Quastad said the tie to Miller will help to get the community
involved.
Lots of students wear hats to school but because of the school's dress code, they must
remove them in the building. The pep club wants those students and more to remember to
wear hats this Friday but to also take the challenge of wearing hats from different
categories.
Hats will be judged in these categories: super stocking, very vintage, coolest cap, fabulous
fan and crazy and creative. A silent auction for three West Hancock High School hats, one
lowa State Cyclones hat and a University of lowa hat, all made by Michelle Anderson, will
also be conducted on Friday.
"There will be a contest to see if the Cyclone or the Hawkeye hat ears the most money,"
pep club adviser Lisa Carlson said.
Miller encouraged students and the community to visit the loveryourmelon.com website to
learn more about the organization.
