Course Outline
Welcome to Planning 10! This course is designed to enable you (the student) to develop the
skills required to become a self-directed individual who is able to set goals, plan and take
responsibility for your future. The course will assist you in learning how to become thoughtful
decision-makers.
In Planning 10, you will:
Learn about the requirements for graduation, and how to reach your goals
Understand the process of decision-making and how decisions affect yourself and others
Develop an understanding on how to take personal responsibility, and maintain your
overall health, financial well-being, and achievement of educational and/or career goals
Develop the skills and attitude to plan for a successful transition from secondary school
to adulthood
Course Content:
Week 1 Graduation Requirements and Transitions
Which courses and exams do I need to take to graduate secondary school?
Which one (s) of the Eight Focus Areas interest me? What path do I see myself taking
in my secondary school program?
What are the three components of Graduation Transitions and how do I meet the
requirements for each component?
Create a preliminary Graduation Transitions plan for your chosen Focus Area
Week 2 Personal Interests and Attributes & Post-Secondary Options
Who am I? What interests me? What am I skilled at? How can I use my skills/interests
and attributes to reach my goals?
Which post-secondary programs match my interests? What kinds of programs are
available which meet my goals?
What are the various aspects I need to consider when choosing a post-secondary path?
What is my personal preference for post-secondary institutions? Why?
Week 3 Job Seeking the Labour Market
What kinds of jobs can I get? How are jobs different depending on their career sector?
What is the market like for the career that I have an interest in?
What makes me employable? What kinds of skills do I need to have to be employable?
Week 4 Job Keeping
What employability skills do I have? How will I develop my skills further?
How do I find possible job opportunities? Learn to search for work!
Writing a resume and cover letter what are the different styles and formats?
How do I prepare for an interview? What are the keys to a successful interview process?
Week 5 My Rights and Responsibilities in the Workplace / Reducing & Preventing injury
Where do I find information that explains my rights and responsibilities as an employee?
What are the rights and responsibilities of my employer?

What do I need to do to stay safe in the workplace?
How can I prevent injury at work? What are the causes of injuries?
Week 6 Where/who do I turn to for help to achieve my goals?
What kind of support will I need to meet my goals? Where can I find that support?

What are my short-term and long-term educational and career goals?
How will I meet my goals? What will be some of the challenges in meeting my goals?
Create a timeline with dates and deadlines that will help you meet your goals

Week 9 Healthy Relationships
How is communication related to healthy relationships?
What makes a relationship healthy?
How do I problem solve if I am having problems in my relationship?
What makes my school a safe and caring place?
How can I prevent problems in my school? How can I promote respect for diversity?
Week 10 Health Decisions- Sexual Decision Making, HIV/AIDS
What are common health issues for teenagers? How can I attain good health practices?
What are the potential effects of my health-related decisions?
How do I practice safe sex and reduce the risk of unplanned pregnancies and sexually
transmitted infections (including HIV/AIDS)
What are the practices and behaviours that I can follow to sustain my sexual health?
Week 11 Health Decisions- Substance Misuse and Road Safety
What substances can be misused? How can the misuse of substances affect my goals?
How do others influence me in relation to substance misuse? What can I do to prevent
misuse of substances?
What are some road-related risks? How can we reduce risk on the road?
Week 12 Financial Literacy- Understanding Money
