Let's get to work. The school day is the critical time for implementing the Active & Healthy
Schools Program, which can benefit students, teachers and staff. Let's look at some steps for
improving your Active & Healthy score during the school day.
Curriculum: 20%
Let's get to work. The Active & Healthy Schools Program is committed to creating programs that
schools can successfully implement and maintain. Let's look at some possibilities for your PE
program.
Recess / Lunch: 75%
Great potential! How about some more nutritional education? A little more activity? Together,
these key Active & Healthy areas can deliver outstanding results.
After School: 20%
Let's get to work. Take a look at a few simple changes your school can make to help create an
Active & Healthy environment, both at school and at home.

What are at least two strengths and two weaknesses of your school?

According to the School Assessment Tool, recess/lunch is a strength of Canyon Ridge

Elementary School. Although there is a tie between curriculum and after school, I see curriculum
as a strength of the school and after school as a weakness. The School Assessment Tool also
indicates that during school is a weakness.
Describe each strength and weakness based on your observation/experience as well as your
results from the School Assessment Tool.
Canyon Ridge's two strengths are recess/lunch and curriculum. Students are given at least 15
minutes of recess before or after lunch, unless weather becomes a factor and students cannot go
outside. Also, at Canyon Ridge a majority of the grade levels incorporate a unit of health/fitness.
During these units students are taught different aspects of health and fitness, academic
curriculum is also incorporated in the unit.
Canyon Ridge's two weaknesses are after school and during school. Canyon Ridge offers after
school sports but the students must make the team to participate, so if the students do not make
the team there is no activity for them to participate in after school. Also, during school students
participate in Physical Education classes but it is not on a daily basis. The way that the specials
schedule works is each class is assigned one special for a whole week, so students only
participate in Physical education every three weeks.
What are at least two ways to improve the policies in place at your school? Explain detailed
information for each way and what you expect from each way.
Currently the grade levels that incorporate a health/fitness unit only do it once a year. Mandating
teachers to incorporate a health/fitness unit with their academic curriculum would increase
students' access to this information and guarantee that all students in all grade levels would be
exposed to health/fitness information. Canyon Ridge is also a STEM school, so having each
grade level incorporate a STEM project that incorporates health/fitness would also increase
students' knowledge on the topic and possibly their interest.
Also, enforcing healthy lunches not only that the school provides but that students bring from
home. Walking around the lunch room, students have lunch boxes filled with soda, chips, and
candy. By not allowing students to bring junk for lunch, it would increase their healthy food
intake.

What are at least two ways that you can you use this information to engage administration,
teachers, parents, students and the community in promoting more healthful behaviors? Include a
specific description for how to use the results from the School Assessment Tool as well as your
ideas for improvement.
To promote healthy behavior among everyone I could talk to the school admin about
incorporating open gym once a week. This would increase the schools after school health and
fitness environment. Open gym would also bring faculty, students, parents and the community
together.
I could also incorporate a healthy tip of the week or day into the daily morning announcement;
this message would reach both students and staff. Also, I could send home a weekly or monthly
newsletter to families that contain information like healthy snacks, fun family activities, and etc.
How can the information obtained be used to support your potential topic for the Signature
Assignment?
Now that I am more aware of where my school lacks in being a health environment, I can look at
how I can help to improve those areas.
School Information
The school that I am currently placed at is Canyon Ridge Elementary School (public school).
Canyon Ridge is in the Dysart District. Canyon Ridge is located in a suburban area. The school is
home to 923 students in grades kindergarten to eighth. Of the 923 students 5 % are African
American, 3% are Asian, 20% are Hispanic, .8% are Native American, .2 % are Pacific Islander,
3 % are two or more ethnicities, and 68% are Caucasian. (School Digger. 2014)
Canyon Ridge serves free or reduced lunch to 27.8% of their students and is not a Title 1 school.
The average class sizes at Canyon Ridge consist of 26 students. Canyon Ridge has a attendance
rate of 95% and is labeled as an A school. The proportion of ELL students was not able to be
found. (School Digger. 2014)
