Lab #: 6
Topic: Osmosis
Aim: To observe the movement of water by the process of (Diffusion) Osmosis
Q

To write an accurate
hypothesis.

4 Mastered: Students can write a hypothesis in a statement form, that is

testable, containing a cause and effect .
3 Proficient: Students can write a hypothesis in a statement form that it
contains a cause or an effect but is too wordy and contains irrelevant
information.
2 Developing : Students write a hypothesis that is in a statement form
that contains does not cause or an effect hence it is not testable but is
related to the topic.
1 Beginning : Students writes a hypothesis in a question form and is
testable and relates to the topic.
0 No Basis : Students cannot write a hypothesis in a statement form,
that is testable or containing a cause or effect and not related to the
topic.

To be able to differentiate
between a dependent and
independent variable.

4 Mastered: Students can identify both the dependent and independent

variable
3 Proficient: Students can identify both the dependent or independent
variable but the variables are too wordy and includes irrelevant
information.
2 Developing : Students can identify either the dependent or
independent variable.
1 Beginning : Students can identify either the dependent or independent
variable but the one identified is too wordy and includes irrelevant
information.
0 No Basis : Students cannot identify either of the variables.

To be able to identify the

control group and controlled
variables.

4 Mastered: Students can identify the control group and all controlled
variables
3 Proficient: Students can identify the control group and a few control
variables
2 Developing : Students can identify the either control group or a
few/all the control variables.
1 Beginning : N/A

0 No Basis : Students cannot identify the control group or any control

variables

V(i)

To be able to use the claim

as the first part of analyzing
data.

4 Mastered: Claim answers the question, is accurate, and is

complete. Completely describes the trend in the relationship
between the IV and DV where appropriate.
3 Proficient: Claim answers the question, and is accurate, but is
incomplete
2 Developing : Claim does answer the question but it is
inaccurate.
1 Beginning : Claim does not answer the question (i.e., describe
the relationship between the 2 variables)
0 No Basis : Does not make a claim

V(ii)

To be able to use evidence

as part of analyzing data.

4 Mastered: Provides appropriate and sufficient evidence to

support the claim
3 Proficient: Provides appropriate and sufficient evidence to
support the claim. May include some inappropriate evidence.
2 Developing : Provides appropriate, but insufficient evidence to
support the claim. May include some inappropriate evidence
1 Beginning : Only provides inappropriate evidence (evidence
does not support the claim)
0 No Basis : Does not provide evidence

V(iii)

To be able to use evidence

as part of analyzing data.

L
Making observations of lifes
processes that is
demonstrated in the
experiment.

4 Mastered:Includes explanation of science concepts that link

evidence to the claim (concepts are appropriate), and they are
sufficient (no omission of key science concepts) and are clearly
stated and accurate
3 Proficient: Includes explanation of some science concepts that
link evidence to the claim, but are insufficient (one or more
concepts that should have been included are not included) or
some are inappropriate
2 Developing : Includes explanation of science concepts but all
are inappropriate concepts that do not link evidence to claim
1 Beginning : Restates evidence and does not include
explanation of science concepts
0 No Basis : Does not include reasoning

4 Mastered: Students can be able to make a connection between a

phenomenon and a biological process that is observed or
demonstrated.

experiment.

3 Proficient: NA
2 Developing : NA
1 Beginning : NA
0 No Basis : Students cannot be able to make a connection
between a phenomenon and a biological process that is
observed or demonstrated.

(1) Write a hypothesis; What would happen to the weight of the potato if it is placed in salt
water?

.....................................................................................................................................................................
(2) If the experimental group salt is added, describe how the control group should be treated.

.....................................................................................................................................................................
(3) Name one control Variable in this experiment.

...................................................................................
(4) Identify the Dependent and Independent Variable

Dependent Variable:.................................................................

Independent Variable:...............................................................
Materials:
Electric Scale
Two beaker
Petri dishes
1 Potato,
Water
salt solution ( make salt solution by 2 teaspoon of salt into 100 ml of water)
Method:
(1) Cut 2 strips of potatoes of equal length (5 cm x 1cm x 1cm)
(2) Place 100 ml of tap water in one beaker and place 100 ml of salt solution in another beaker .
(3) Weigh and record the initial mass of each potato strip in lab notebook using the table below.

(4) Place Potato 1 in the tap water and Potato 2 in the salt solution.
(5) Reweigh the potato after 30 minutes and record the mass in the table you have drawn.
(6) Calculate the weight change of each potato below by using this formula:
Weight change= Initial mass - Final Mass

(7) Explain your results using a DEST template.
