What are at least two strengths and two weaknesses of your school? Describe each strength
and weakness based on your observation/experience as well as your results from the School
Assessment Tool.
One strength that our school has is allowing students an hour of outside learning (recess). For the
morning after breakfast our students get thirty minutes of outside learning and after lunch
students receive another thirty minutes of outside learning time. Another strength our school has
is lunch. Although lunch is not as healthy as it should be, it still provides a main course, fruits,
and vegetables, and milk for students. They all get an equal amount of servings, when they want
more servings of fruits or vegetables, they can self-serve themselves. With our lunch, the
cafeteria provides snacks for the students, which is disturbed thirty minutes before they are
released to go home. Our students are given both breakfast, lunch, and snack every day.
One weakness about our school, they do not provide any physical fitness opportunities for the
students and for the staff. It would be great to have small fitness activities that students can take
part in rather than their outside learning time. It would also help the staff to be involved in
activities, it will help motivate the students to take part. Another weakness, our school does not
provide newsletters about any health or physical fitness activities for families that they can do at
home or provide any activities outside the school but within the community. This could help the
family go out and do fun physical fitness activities together.
What are at least two ways to improve the policies in place at your school? Explain detailed
information for each way and what you expect from each way. What are at least two ways
that you can you use this information to engage administration, teachers, parents, students
and the community in promoting more healthful behaviors? (Include a specific description

for how to use the results from the School Assessment Tool as well as your ideas for
improvement.)
One way to improve our school would be to inform the principle. Showing the principle the
assessment results would help the school to improve by making changes to help reform and
incorporate health and physical fitness. Another way to help improve our school would be to give
a survey to all staff and families. This survey would consist of questions that would ask: what
they think is missing within the classroom, what activities could be embedded during the day,
how we can work together to make the school more outgoing, and what health or physical
activities families can do at home or within the community. These improvements will conduct
many ideas, help build teamwork, and be the building blocks to improving the school
environment.
How can the information obtained be used to support your potential topic for the Signature
Assignment?
I believe this information can help benefit the school to start something that will help students
become healthier, having the staff be more involved to help motivate their students to be the role
model to make a difference in both the students and their families. This course allows us to help
make a change so the younger generations can stay fit and healthy. Today, most of our children
are not getting enough physical movements or they are not being given the proper nutrients to
help their bodies stay healthy. Being in a classroom with twenty students, we have the
opportunity to help our students become healthy.

The school I am placed at is named, Martin Luther King Early Childhood Elementary School. It
is within the Roosevelt school district and is a title 1 public school, located outside the city of
Phoenix. MLK has limited range of ethnic students, 77% of Hispanics, 13% of Black, 10%
White, and 1% of both Asian and American Indian preschool students. There are currently 127
preschool students enrolled at MLKing. The number of ELLs is undetected, but a majority of our
students speak a second language. The average preschool classroom size holds about 20 students
with one lead teacher and two paraprofessionals. The school provides 5.5% of free reduced lunch
to our students. All breakfast, lunch, and snack are provided to every classroom. Students have
the choice to eat as much or as little as they want, because there are some students who eat
before they come to school.
The parent involvement in the school setting varies, the school holds parent meetings once every
month. Parents can participate in making changes to the programs and also they give input to
help the school improve. Communication among staff is great, there are meetings and some
trainings held every Fridays. The school setting is very friendly and accepting
