Marlon Cruz 7C Science March 13, 2015 Dear Parents, Some of our recycling skills in the family are not very active or putto work However recyoling helps us and the environment. Today I'm going to give you some information about the use of plastic and the negative impacts plastic can cause to many ecosystems miles away from here. Plastic was first created in the 1950's. Itwas originally made with comstarch, which means that if you bury a plastic made out of comstarch it would biodegrade. This means that this type of plastic can decompose by bacteria. Plastic is now made of crude oil and natural gas, which means that is not biodegradable. Plastic is made by putting together many single chemical units called monomers. When you put the monomers together it creates a chain called a polymer. We use plastic in many ways such like holding water inside or putting leftover food into a plastic container. However the plastic we are now using is very harmful to the environment around us. Have you ever seen an empty bottle laying down in the streets? Have you ever wondered where is the last destination of that bottle? Once it rains ora windy day comes, the plastic is pushed into the sewers, then into watersheds, into bodies of water, and then into the ocean. All that trash gets trapped into The Great Pacific Gyre. A gyre is a vortex created by rotating ocean currents. There is much more microscopic plastic than plankton in the gyre, which means that there's a big amount of plastic being dumped into the streets which means there's even much more plastic polluting the ocean. Plastic is not biodegradable but, itis photodegradable. This means that the plastic decompose into microscopic pieces by the sunlight but, it does not fully decomposes, the plastic is still there. You can't consume or digest plastic. The Albatross Seabird have died because of ingesting plastic. There is not a lot of edible source of food in this ecosystem since plastic has taken over. What plastic does to the birds is that it clogs their stomach and plastic takes up space in their stomach, which tricks them into feeling full. Then they died from lack of nutrients and dehydration. Plastic contains a deadly chemical in it, it's called Bisphenol A (BPA). BPA is harmful because once it’s in an organism's system, the chemical acts like estrogen. Estrogen messes with male's reproductive system and their levels of testosterone. This chemical is released once it gets to the process of photodegradation. If you heat up some leftover food in a plastic container, the heat waves from the microwaves heats up not also the food but, the container too. This allows the plastic to distribute the chemical into the food you are going to eat. The process of BPA leaking can also occur when you put something plastic made into the dishwasher because the dishwasher creates heat and this allows the chemical to be distribute. Scientists experimented washing baby bottles in the washing machines. The results where that there was a lot of BPA being ‘exposed in the bottles. Think about what would happen to your developing baby if they were drinking from that BPA exposed bottle. Their development would be affected by the chemical, since BPA acts like estrogen. in the Ocean there’s a ton of plastic that is releasing its chemical because of the sun's heat. When BPA is released into the Ocean, it does not only affect the species living init, itaffects us too. Once they have that chemical into their bodies other fishes or predators would wantto eat it and as it moves up the food chain the top predator which is us gets the bigger amount of BPA. We also get our water from the Ocean, that even affects us even more because we eat and drink from the Ocean. I want to encourage our family to put our recycling skills in action. It would help us not only because it's the right thing to do but, we are also helping ourselves and the rest of the world. Little by little we can start making a change. We can decrease the deaths of Albatross just by doing our share. We depend on a clean Ocean and our actions reflect ‘on how clean the Ocean is. Sincerely, Marion Cruz ST. Vereen Assignment Name: Dear Parent Plastics Letter Description and Process: Students are currently studying the issues that are plaguing our oceans. The case studies focused on plastics/pollution, overfishing, and ocean acidification. At the conclusion of the plastics /pollution unit, students were charged with the task of taking their new knowledge and teaching others in order to inspire change in our actions. Students had to teach their parents about the history and composition of plastics and why it poses a problem to our environment. They each wrote a letter, which included their new learning as well as observations and suggestions to make improvements at home. Attached you will find documents from the draft through the final copy and reflection. They were graded using a portion school wide writing rubric. After the first draft, students did a peer critique (ona sticky note) which was not saved. In addition, students shared me on their google doc where they were given emailed or direct suggestions for edits. Science HW Write a “Dear Parent” letter explaining: 1. Wek iS ong very (pul ANwnng Ane dg ie ypens A Ve Dear Parents, Ijust wanted tolet you know that we have started a new unit in Science Class. It is about how we have harmed the ocean and the marine animalsin the ocean. In this letter, Iwill be talking about the composition of plastics, the resulting trash and The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, BPA( Blsphenyl A), and the Albatross Seabirds. Also about our recycling habits and how we can make our recycling habits alittle bit more better than itis right now. You will alsolearn about the history of the plastics that we even use right now. Plastics were first made in the 1950s, which is a really long long time ago. Did you know that plastics were even made out of cornstarch? They were even biodegradable back then but not now. [know had no idea it was also! But now cornstarch isn't made out of cornstarch any more. It is made from crude oil and natural gases, Actually itis pretty cheap tomake, but its environmentally costly. Which are very expensive and also is an environmental hazard to the marine animals. But the good thing is that plastics are inexpensive but still very dangerous. But itis also difficult to recycle but it is incredibly durable and longlasting,( “Plastics Background Information’and “History Notes’) Plastics are made out of polymers which are very long linked monomers. ‘Monomers are single celled. The plastic polymers are made from H&G which is hydrogen and carbon, not some type of shop like H&M. Which are the elements that are in plastics. When they are rearranged correctly it produces resin, which is in all plastics.( “Plastics Background Information’) Do you know what the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is? I bet you don't really know whatitis. Itis a gyre, a gyre is a type of whirlpool current that takes in all of the trash, It has 20 million tons of plastics in the ocean. Itis still accumulating now. WOW!I know right that's a lot of trash. But there’s 100 MILLION TONS OR TRASH! It was just 20 million tons, now its 100! Crazy, right but its very dangerous for the large amount of trash and plastic tobe in the ocean. Since plastic is photodegradable it doesn't really disappear like biodegradable things do. Photodegradable is a bad thing because it never leaves it just turns into very small tiny piece of plastic.(“A Plastic Problem” and “Strange Days Episode 6:Dirty Secrets”) Okay now lets talk a little bit about the evil pest roaming everywhere like in baby bottles and the ocean. BPA can leak out of the plastic bottles and get into the ocean which is very bad. BPA isharmful because of how it actslike estrogen and messes male levels of testosterone. This means that males have female characteristic. Babies are also susceptible to BPA. It can leak through their baby bottles. Isn't that the WORST! IF it was in the dishwasher for 24 hours it would consume 10x as much BPA than ithad before. OMGI!!IKR. The key ingredient to make BPA leach out is the amount of heat, Sometimes very bad thing can happen best of our bad habits. Like how the Albatross Seabirds are dying. They are dying from malnutrition and dehydration which are the two things every organism needs. Scientist studied their skeletons and found plastics and trash in the stomachs. Which also has many things in related to photodegradable things like the plastic now. Also industrial things that looked like small fish eggs. Which was NOT small fish eggs. Those birds died because of the bad habits from people all around the world. Mostly because of the plastic and trash in the ocean, They died because they got their food from the Garbage Patch. Information about the Albatross Seabirds and "strange Days Episode 6:Dirty Secrets") Our recycling habits can also be helpful and not helpful so Yeah.n Since we already recycle that's a pro for us. BUt to make it alittle bit better we could add three recycling bins for like PAPER:PLASTICS:GLASS, those are the three bins we need.(My ideas on what we should do to make the plastic problems reduce and much morethings that can change everything’) Sincerely your beloved daughter, Angel C.
