from Mr. Ortega, the Dean
of Liceo Panamericano. He
gave me a picture and I
modified it on Photoshop,
afterwards I printed it and
drew a grid over the image
so I could accurately draw it
on the canvas.

The title of this painting is
DiscrimiNation. I tried to
portray three global issues:
Discrimination against people
with African background,
prejudice against Islamic or
Middle Eastern people and
sexism. Even if nations dare to
say that we have come a long
way from racism and
discrimination, I still see forms
of discrimination every day. I
named this painting
DiscrimiNation so I could
raise awareness. Theres
still much to be done. The
media generates stereotypes,
and I believe this one of the
main causes why most of
the times society has prejudice
toward certain groups.

THE PERKS OF
BEING NOTHING.

Additional Details:
It came to my mind while wondering about
how hard it was going to be to take stuff from
my room in Ecuador to my dorm in the USA.
I had to create an artwork with two properties,
lightweight and manageable. So, Balsa wood
and zippers came to my mind.
I decided to use Balsa it is a sustainable and
national resource. Unlike other woods, Balsa is
extremely light weighted, so this would facilitate moving it from one place to another. Since
the artwork had to be manageable, I thought
zippers would work great if I cut the Balsa in
equal strips.
The final result was NOTHING at bare sight,
just a rectangle with zippers. Well, working
zippers. So basically, this simple artwork
turned out to have infinite possibilities. It
turned out to be more portable than I thought
and much more fun.
