Introduction
1 Overview
The OptiX OSN 3500 is a flexible, SDH add/drop multiplexer that offers the services
aggregation and high-bandwidth transport of voice and data traffic on a single
platform. The OptiX OSN 3500 provides efficient service management and rapid
upgrade and capacity expansion without disrupting service.
Introduction
The OptiX OSN 3500 is endowed with all features for evolving into the next
generation NG-SDH platform. That is, with platform constructed by high-rate
backplane bus, OptiX OSN 3500 can be smoothly developed into an intelligent optical
network product. Additionally, as a member of Huawei optical network product family,
OptiX OSN 3500 features powerful higher-order and lower-order cross-connect
capability and abundant service interfaces, and its rate can be smoothly upgraded
from 2.5G to 10G. When used together with OptiX OSN 2500 (STM-1/4/16 MSTP),
the software and hardware of all service board, including SDH/PDH/Ethernet service
board, boards can be exchanged in use, minimizing the cost of investment and
maintenance for the customer.
The OptiX OSN 3500 product is chiefly used at the convergence layer and backbone
layer of the MAN. The powerful cross-connect matrix endows the OptiX OSN 3500
with flexible networking and service grooming capability of a Multi Add/Drop
Multiplexer (MADM). With the Layer 2 (L2) Ethernet switching and L2 Virtual Private
Network (VPN) technologies, interconnection of dedicated lines as well as reliable
Internet Protocol (IP) service transmission and high bandwidth utility can be fulfilled.
Also, it can save the cost of networking investment for operators by constructing a
network with equipments such as OptiX OSN 9500, OptiX 10G, OptiX OSN 2500 and
OptiX Metro 1000/500, as shown in Figure 2.

2 Features
2.1 Flexible Configuration into STM-16 or
STM-64 System
The OptiX OSN 3500 can be configured as either STM-16 system at convergence
layer or the STM-64 System at backbone layer. And the STM-16 system can be
smoothly upgraded to an STM-64 one. Figure 3 and Figure 4 respectively shows the
access capacity of OptiX OSN 3500 when it is configured as STM-16 and STM-64
system.

classification is performed to the Ethernet service according to the port and VLAN ID
to distinguish different VLANs that Company A and B belong to respectively. Up to
eight IEEE802.1P-compliant priorities can be set according to the flow classification
result. The OptiX OSN 3500 isolates services of different users through VLAN to
achieve security purpose. In the figure below, VLAN 1 of Company A shares a
VC-Trunk with VLAN 1 of Company B, and VLAN 2 of Company A shares a VC-Trunk
with VLAN 2 of Company B, and VLAN 3 of Company A shares a VC-Trunk with
VLAN 3 of Company B.
All services of Company A are converged to NE1 and output from an FE/GE interface
to Lanswitch for processing.

7. EPL/EVPL Service
The OptiX OSN 3500 adopts the Martini modes to construct the MPLS L2 VPN and
provides EPL/EVPL service. As shown in Figure 13, the system will check the Port +
Vlan ID table and add the external label (Tunnel) and internal label (VC) it gets to the
accessed Ethernet frames. Data transfer in the network is based on the external label,
which will be discarded at the Provider Routers (P) equipment at the last hop. Then,
the data will be transmitted to the corresponding Provider Edges (PE) equipment,
which transfers the data to corresponding port according to the internal label. The
OptiX OSN 3500 integrates the function of P equipment and PE equipment.

Management
Maintenance
The OptiX OSN 3500 addresses the needs of the customers for the Operation,
Maintenance and Management (OAM) of the equipment in terms of cabinet, board
design, and function setting. It provides the following powerful equipment
maintenance capabilities.
The subrack generates audible and visual alarms to remind the network
administrators to take proper measures in the case of any emergency.
It provides sixteen Boolean value input interfaces and four Boolean value
output interfaces, and four cabinet alarm indicator output interfaces for
convenient operation and management of the equipment.
All boards are provided with running and alarm indicators to help the network
administrators to locate and handle faults as soon as possible.
31
32
By means of the NM system, the running and alarm status of the equipment at
all stations on the network are dynamically monitored.
Board software and host software can be upgraded and loaded on-line. Board
software and Flexible Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) supports remote
loading, and provides the functions of error prevention loading and breakpoint
continuous transmission.
2 Equipment Management
The OptiX OSN 3500 is uniformly managed by the NM system. Through the Qx
interface or MML interface, the NM system can implement management,
maintenance and test to the whole optical transmission system in terms of fault,
performance, configuration and security. The NM system improves the quality of
network services, reduces the maintenance cost and ensures rational use of network
resources.
Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. provides telecommunication operators with a whole
series of optical transmission systems, which can be used on networks of different
layers. To manage sub-network, area network or national network efficiently, the NM
system is required to feature basic operation and maintenance functions, and the
monitoring and management capability on the optical transmission network as well.
According to the Telecommunications Management Network (TMN) network
management hierarchical model, the telecommunication network management is
divided into network element layer (NEL), NE management layer (EML), network
management layer (NML), service management layer (SML) and business
management layer (BML). The NE management system manages NE equipments
within one subnet, while the NM system implements the network layer assignment,
fault monitoring, performance analysis, resource analysis, circuit dispatching, etc. in a
large-scale network.
To adapt to network management of different scales and levels, the OptiX iManager
series products of Huawei consists of the local maintenance terminal, NE
management system, regional network management system and network level NM
system. These products cover the applications of the TMN from the NE management
layer, subnet management layer to the network management layer, and contain part
of the service management layer functions. All the OptiX iManager series products
can perform uniform management on SDH, WDM and OSN equipments. With these
products, Huawei is able to provide telecommunication operators with a complete
package of network management solutions for single equipment, single service to
large scale and multi-service networks.
