IB PYP Classroom Checklist

A PYP classroom is organized to encourage students to become internationally minded learners.


Display items are interactive for students and reflect a PYP approach to learning that permeates the
classroom. The classroom is kid-friendly, engaging, and orderly. Every posting has a clearly
defined purpose relating to student learning. Classrooms must be organized in such a way to allow
for smooth transitions between small group, whole group, and individual learning activities.
Display of Learner Profile and the PYP Elements
(Student created is preferable and visible to students)
Learner Profile (descriptions can be hung and displayed on rings and referred to when
needed)
Transdisciplinary themes (current theme must be posted on the board or front of classroom)
Attitudes (create a poster with the class with pictures the words must visible and legible)
Concepts (display all, but highlight the ones in your current unit of inquiry, e.g. with a clip)
Approaches to Learning [Skills] (display all, but highlight the ones in your current unit of
inquiry)
Action cycle (pages 25 27 Making PYP Happen) - Have an Action Board to show
students ongoing personal, social and academic growth. Several examples on Pinterest)

Student Questions (post on a Question Board/Parking Lot as they come up during
instruction, or written on post-its at their desk. This will also help when completing

Student original work and student initiated actions inside the classroom, showing evidence
of ongoing learning process, as well as products.

Essential Agreements and Mission Statements (Posted in all classrooms)


Essential agreements (instead of being called class rules), are created in collaboration with
the students, not store bought.

Outside of classroom

Any work posted outside the classroom must have:


Grade level, Transdisciplinary theme, central idea, lines of inquiry, concepts (with any
questions)
Photos (optional, but a nice addition)
Rubric
Student reflection
Connection to world theme
Any mother tongue contributions that a student may want to add

Student Portfolios (Seesaw)
A planned and organized collection of student work that moves with the student from grade level
to grade level until fifth grade. Please note: a sample portfolio must be kept at the end of fifth
grade.
Accessible for students, teachers, visitors
IB portfolios should have six (one per unit clearly labeled) of each of the following:
Quality piece of student work - or picture of it
student reflection as a learner - about the work selection
rubric (if one is available)
student reflection as an individual - Learner Profile (end of each semester)
