Introduction
Before
Computer
s
First
Generatio
n
1942-1955 circa
Used Vacuum Tubes for memory.
Example of a first generation computer are the ENVIAC and
UNIVAC-1.
These computers could calculate data.
Developed by two American scientist: MauchlyandEchert
Vacuum Tubes are is a device sometimes used to amplify
electronic signals.(Definition according to Google)
Vacuum tubes had to be consistently replaced because they
broke down easily.
Second
Generatio
n
1955-1964 circa
They used transistors ( developed by Bell Laboratories)
These computers used assembly language instead of machine
language
Cooling systems were required to prevent overheating.
Push cards were used for input
Transistors replaced the old Vacuum Tubes and were much
smaller and easier to replace.
BESM-6was the first second generation computer created by a
group in the USSR.
Third
Generatio
n
1964-1975
Used integrated circuits (developed by Jack Kibly).
A third generation computer is the IBM370 and the
UNIVAC1108.
Still air conditioning to prevent overheating
required.
A single IC chip contained thousands of transistors.
Very hard to create the chips.
Fourth
Generatio
n
1975-present
Started the invention of Microprocessor created by Ted
Hoff.
An example is the Intel 4004.
Millions of electronic circuits.
Computers we see today are this generation.
They are lighter, cheaper, more efficient and faster.
Portable.
Fifth
Generatio
n Present-Beyond
Artificial Intelligence
Can understand and imitate scientist
IBM Watson
Can outsmart Harvard students.
It is being used for clinical purposes.
