Bursaries Policy and Procedure

Bursaries are awarded to help meet the costs of an individual


members participation in an educational course/activity consistent with
the objectives of the WI summarised as:
o To advance the education of women and girls for the public
benefit
o To promote sustainable development for the public benefit
o To advance health for the public benefit
o To advance citizenship for the public benefit by the promotion of
civic responsibility and volunteering

The budget for bursaries will be agreed by the membership of the


DEWI annually

All members of DEWI (including dual members) are eligible to apply for
a bursary

Any member awarded a DEWI bursary will be ineligible to apply for the
two subsequent years

Applications for bursaries are to be made by completing the standard


DEWI bursary application form and returning it via email to the
Secretary of DEWI; the application should include:

Brief description of the course for which the bursary is sought


How much the course/activity costs
How much is sought as a bursary towards meeting those costs
Outcome the participant hopes to achieve from the educational
course/activity, in particular to show how the course/activity
supports the objectives of the WI

All information received as part of the application process will be kept in


strictest confidence

The Bursary Sub Committee, chaired by the DEWI Treasurer and to


include 3 other members of the DEWI Committee, will receive, assess
and decide on the award of bursaries

The Bursary Sub Committee will assess all bursary applications and
will decide on the number and value of awards to be made within the
annual bursary budget limit approved by the DEWI membership. In the
event that the cumulative value of eligible applications submitted
exceeds the budget, the Bursary Sub Committee will set a limit on the
value of any individual award, the names of all qualifying applicants will
then be entered into a draw with winners drawn at random up to the
approved budget limit. The effect of this may mean that a bursary
awarded could be lower than the value sought by the applicant

Any costs associated with the course/activity in excess of the awarded


bursary are the responsibility of the member receiving the bursary

The bursary sub-committee will meet twice a year, in July and


November, to consider any applications submitted by the relevant
deadline. For bursaries to be awarded in July, the deadline is 31 June,
for bursaries to be awarded in November the deadline is 31 October.
Note: for 2015 only the budget is set at 900, the deadline is set for 30 th
Sept 2015 and winners will be notified by 14 Th October

Each successful applicant must take up the bursary within one month
of the start of the course for which the bursary has been awarded or
the bursary will be withdrawn

The bursary must be taken up within 12 months of being awarded or


the bursary will be withdrawn

Payment of a bursary will be made directly to the course provider or to


the bursary holder on receipt of proof of payment

Declaration of interest: in the case of a committee member making an


application for a bursary she will not participate in the exercise to
assess and decide on the awards to be made. The member, if present
at the meeting, shall declare an interest, shall withdraw from the
meeting while the application is considered or discussed, and shall not
vote on the matter. In respect of individual members making bursary
applications they are required to conform with the standard WI
declaration of interest principles (if in doubt please ask a Committee
officer)
