Background Information
Date: 9/28/15

School: Cleveland Elementary

Grade Level: 2nd

Lesson Focus:
Different speeds (Fast, slow, medium)
Different levels (Underhand throwing)

# Of students: 20

Equipment and Facilities:

Blacktop
3 x polyspots (Red, green, yellow)
30 yarn balls
20 polyspots
40 Bean bags
1 bucket
7 hula hoops

Safety Considerations:
-Students accidentally hitting other students around
the head area when throwinh their bean bag. If that
happens I will take the student out of range of the
other students and make sure they are okay. If they
arent I will find Brittainy and get her to take them to
the school nurse.

Lesson Specifics
Behavioral Contingencies:
Previously Learned Skills:
If a student is misbehaving I will give them a strike.
Running, skipping, hopping, galloping, teamwork
When I give them a strike I need to explain to them
why they got the strike. If a student gets 3 strikes then
I will send them to the cafeteria.
Teaching Strategy:
Academic Language:
Demonstrative

Objectives:

Psychomotor (P): SWBAT move at different speeds fast, medium and slow. SWBAT
underhand throw a bean bag or yarn ball up high (like an arch) and at waist level (like a
softball throw) using the cues (step with the opposite foot, bring throwing arm back, swing
throwing arm forward, release the ball, follow through).
Cognitive (C): SWBAT understand the different types of speed the body can move, and
explain them. SWBAT understand the cues of underhand throwing and be able to repeat them
as they are doing the skill.
H-R Fitness (H): SWBAT understand the benefits of being active to keep healthy.

Describe the pre-class arrangement

Teacher: Waiting for the students to put their back packs away. Telling the students as they arrive to find a poly
spot and sit on it.
Students: Are either still coming from their class or they are putting their bags away and finding a poly spot to
sit on.
Equipment: Poly spots are set up for the students to sit on after they put their backpacks away. Equipment for
the second task is set up for the students on the court next to them. (Students will not face the equipment when
they are doing the IA and the first task.

Instant Activity:
To start off the lesson we are
going to play a game called
red light green light yellow
light. Does everyone
remember how to play this
game from last week? (Yes!)
Good!
Remember there are different
speeds green is fast, yellow
is medium and red is slow/not
moving.
Everyone can stand up on
their poly spots and when I
get to the other side I will
start the game. Does
everyone understand?

Set Induction:
Today we are going to learn
the different levels of
underhand throwing.

Start/Stop Signals:
When I want the students
attention I will get them to sit on
their poly spot and put their
hands on their head. If I want
their attention and theyre in the
middle of a game I will say to
stop and listen and put their
hands on their head.

Purpose:
Learning the different types
of underhand throwing is
important because in
underhand throwing sports
both can be useful in different
ways. You can also use these
skills at home to include
exercise during your day.

releasing point high
above the waist
2) Flat throw releasing
the ball at the waist
level
I will do a quick
demonstration of both of the
throws.
I will then get the students to
do at least two of each throw
from their poly spots while
saying the cues of the throw.
Each student will grab two
balls from the pile of
equipment. After each student
has done two throws, I will
tell them all to collect the
equipment so they can do two
more throws.

task

Cognitive: SWBAT
understand the cues of
underhand throwing and be
able to repeat them as they
are doing the skill.
This activity relates to the
psychomotor objective
because students are going to
be physically throwing the
ball 4 times using the cues of
the skill.
Psychomotor: SWBAT
underhand throw a bean bag
or yarn ball up high (like an
arch) and at waist level (like
a softball throw) using the
cues (step with the opposite
foot, bring throwing arm
back, swing throwing arm
forward, release the ball,
follow through)at least 3 out
of 4 times.

Demonstration Plan:
After I explain the
instructions I will do
demonstrations of both
throws. I will say the cues of
the skill as I do them. I will
make sure to show the
difference between the high
and medium release level
between the two throws.

This activity also relates to

the following standards
because the students will need
to understand the concept of
throwing the ball and apply it
so they can physically do it
correctly. It is also something
that they can do outside of
school time to keep them fit if
they add some cardio to it.

Questions to Check
Understanding
1) Do I step with the leg
on the same throwing
arm? (No, the
opposite leg)

task
strategies and tactics
related to movement and
performance.
II.

Demonstrate knowledge
of physical fitness
concepts, principles and
strategies to improve
health and performance.

Teaching Cues for Task 1:

step with the opposite foot,
bring throwing arm back,
swing throwing arm forward,
release the ball, follow
through
Common Errors Task 1:
1. Students stepping with the
leg thats on the same side as
their throwing arm.
2. Students not swinging
their arm back before they
throw the ball.

There will be poly spots set
up in a large square
formation, one for each
student. In the middle of the
square there will be a bucket
and then hula hoops

surrounding it. The students

will have a total of 70 objects
(of bean bags and yarn balls)
to try to throw in the hula
hoops. They get a point each
time they throw an object into
one of the hula hoops. If a
student throws an object into
the bucket they get two
points. The aim of the task is
to get the most points.
Students are not in groups,
they are playing individually.
Once Ive explained the game
I will tell the students to go
find a poly spot to stand on. I
will distribute the yarn balls
and bean bags in each
corner.

correctly. It is also something
that they can do outside of
school time to keep them fit if
they add some cardio to it.
3. Applies knowledge of
concepts, principles,
strategies and tactics
related to movement and
performance.
III.

Demonstrate knowledge
of physical fitness
concepts, principles and
strategies to improve
health and performance.
This activity also relates to
the following standard
because the students should
enjoy the task as it includes a
challenge.

Demonstration Plan:
I dont think the students need
a demonstration for this
because they were given a
demonstration in the first task
for the same type of throw. If
I start the game and the
students arent doing it
correctly then I will stop the
game, get them to sit down,
and then do a proper
demonstration.

4. Values physical activity

for health, enjoyment,
challenge, selfexpression, and/or social
interaction.

Teaching Cues for Task 2:

*Same as task 1

Common Errors Task 2:

1. Students not doing the cues
because they are trying to get
the most points.
2. Students throwing with two
hands to get more power.

Questions to Check
Understanding
1. If you get the ball into
the hula hoops how
many points do you
get? (1)

task

2. Are we still using the

cues of the skill in this
game (Yes
definitely!)
Adaptations
If this is too easy I will
increase the distance by
moving the poly spots back. If
its too difficult then I will
move the poly spots closer to
the hula hoops to shorten the
distance.

Transition:
Putting the equipment away.
Once I have told the students
that the game is over I will
then tell them all to pick up
their poly spot, the hula
hoops, the bucket, and the
balls. Then I will tell them to
sit on their original poly
spots. Thank the students for
their help.

Tiger Pride what type of
speeds did we go over today
in our first activity where I
held the different colors up?
(Fast, medium, and slow).
Good!
And what main skill did we
learn today? (Underhand
throwing high and low
throw)

saying the cues.
Great! Good job everyone!
See you all on Wednesday.

ASSESSMENT TECHNIQUES: I will assess the students by watching them throw in task 1 and task 2. I will
assess them in the closure too when I get all of them to do the motion of the underhand throw as they are saying
the cues.
