The Lecturer:
Dr. Nassef Adiong graduated his PhD at the Middle East Technical University in
Ankara, Turkey and currently doing his second PhD dissertation for Alliance of
Civilizations Institute, an educational affiliate of the United Nations Alliance of
Civilizations, in Istanbul. He took his Master in International Studies (MIS) at the
University of the Philippines, Diliman. In 2014, he was awarded by the Prime Minister
of the Republic of Turkey as the most outstanding PhD graduate nationwide.
The Lecture:
The study finds compelling points of contentions in comparing both nation-state
and Muslim governance in terms of the 1933 Montevideo criteria (territoriality,
citizenry, authority, and sovereignty) including elements of history, constitution,
Hallaqs moral predicament with modernity, and difficulties with democracy,
secularism, capitalism, and nationalism. To go beyond this comparative conundrum,
the study recommends to theoretically look into selected worldviews such as
Alexander Wendts proposal of a World State theory and various Islamicate
civilizational analyses (i.e. from Khaldunian sociological perspective to entrks
Open Civilization thesis) as alternative world orders in order to encompass an
