Dear Alberta Historical Resources Foundation

Re: Michaelle Haughians Application for a

Roger Soderstrom Scholarship

I am pleased to provide a letter of support for Michaelle Haughians application for a Roger
Soderstrom Scholarship. I believe that her project clearly relates to the objectives of the
scholarship and to those of the Alberta Historical Resources Foundation.
Michaelle has been a student in the Heritage Resources Management program at Athabasca
University and is now nearing completion of the program. She has been an outstanding student.
Her marks have been at the top of her class and she has been awarded several scholarships.
Indeed, I have just seen the awards list for this year and am pleased to see that her name is again
on the list.
I am Michaelles academic supervisor for her Practicum project at the Loyal Edmonton
Regiment Military Museum. As part of a Practicum, a student must develop a detailed project
plan and identify and make arrangements with a host institution. The project must be one that
meets the students interests, but also provide a practical contribution to the identifiable needs of
the host museum. A students ability in this preparatory stage is an important demonstration of
her ability to conceptualize and plan a workable project and negotiate with a partner. Michaelle
showed excellent organizational and conceptual skills, and a strong understanding of how to
construct a project that would meet her hosts needs while satisfying the academic demands of
the Practicum. On the basis of her progress to date, I am fully confident that Michaelles

initiative and skills will allow her to develop an interpretive program that will meet the scholarly
demands of the Practicum and make a genuine contribution to the work of the museum.
Michaelles work record and accomplishments reveal an individual who is strongly motivated
and who will go on to make important contributions to Albertas heritage community. I believe
that a Roger Soderstrom Award will give her the opportunity to enrich and expand her skills and
experience and help her meet her goal of becoming an even better heritage practitioner. She will
be an honour to the Soderstrom scholarship as she has been to our program, and I heartily and
without hesitation recommend Michaelle Haughian for the upcoming award.
If you have any questions or require more information, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,

Donald G. Wetherell Ph.D.
