Lesson Plan Template 1 Primary & Secondary

Unit/Topic: Design
Date: 21/09/15
Year Level: 6/7
Outcomes:
Materials for building, structural shapes, appropriate and unique design
LESSON OUTCOME:
-

Investigate how people in design and technologies occupations address the competing
considerations, including sustainability in the design of products, services, and environments
for current and future use.
Investigate characteristics and properties of a range of materials, systems, components, tools
and evaluate the impact of their use.
Analyse ways to produce designed solutions through selecting and combining characteristics
and properties of materials, systems, components, tools and equipment.

LESSON STRUCTURE:
Time
5- 10
mins

Introduction (Set):
We will be looking at some design and considerations
that need to be made by architects, builders and the
like when designing and developing buildings. Today
we will be focusing on appropriate materials, structural
shapes and designs of buildings.

Time

Main Content:

10- 15
mins

Materials: weather appropriate, strength, sustainable

- What are they?
- Why do we need to take these into consideration
when we are designing buildings?

10-15
mins

Shapes: Why is the shapes of a building important?

- In the development of buildings why is it important
to consider the structural shapes in the design?
- What is the strongest shape for any structure? And
why?

Teaching Approaches

mins

Slideshow of 5 buildings from around the world.

- Key structural points of the building
- What are the shapes we can see in this building?
- How old is the building? Does it still look stable
and will last longer?
- What materials are they made from?
- Compare these buildings: what are the differences,
have they changes over time, did the materials they
use change/different in different countries?

Group discussion /
brainstorm/ investigating as
a class.

Conclusion:
Activity sheet: Design a new tourist coffee shop that will
be built at the base of Uluru.
- Using the things we have talked about in this
lesson.
- Materials, structural shapes and unique design.
- A4 piece of paper.

the lesson and requires students to recall this knowledge.

REFLECTION
This being the first lesson I have taught I was quite nervous. Feedback from the students and teacher
showed that it didnt affect my lesson as they had stated that I did very well, spoke clearly and
confidently. I began the lesson with a small introduction of what will be involved in the lesson, this grab
the attention of the students at the beginning of the lesson and they knew what to expect. Many of the
students responded positively to the lesson and all were engaged and listening throughout the lesson. I
feel that the lesson ran smoothly and I was able to fit everything into the lesson that was originally
planned. The task at the end of the lesson allowed students to get creative and they responded well to it,
as I had many different designs. I achieved the lesson outcomes in this lesson and I felt that this lesson
targeted the outcomes in the Australian curriculum well. Overall I was very happy with the lesson and it
would be something that I may teach my students in my future teaching.
