Abstract
The article makes countless suggestions for the configuration of professional development of
teachers. It also reviews the importance of professional development for teachers, especially in
this time of implementation of the Common Core Standards. The Common Core Standards are a
new guide that describes the expected learning outcomes for students. Students are taught in
many ways to solve a single problem for a better understanding of the concept; teachers nurture
higher level of thinking skills requiring students to go through a process of understanding and
exploration.

Effective Teacher Professional Development Crucial to Common Core

This article reviews the importance of professional development for teachers during this
new time of implementation of the Common Core Standards. Teachers recognize that we need to
learn how to teach the core elements of the Common Core. However it has been a great debate
about the implementation of the Common Core Standards. As we know a teacher must assess the
students in what has been instructed. Students who have access to the match of the curriculum
and assessment, score better on standardized test than they would have if they didnt have access
to this match( as cited in Ventriglias Differentiated Instruction 2013 8th Ed. Pg. 36). Therefore it
is important that the School District and teachers choose textbooks that are aligned with the
Common Core Standards so students can achieve good grades in assessments aligned to those
standards. Also making sure when choosing a textbook to consider the students, as we want
students to feel comfortable where they can be able to understand the content. As well as finding
outside resources to fill in the gaps of what is taught and what is assessed.
This article states that recent reforms have advice teachers to adopt collaboration, debate
and reflection among students. In order to promote problem solving, learner independence and
flexible interaction. I believe that the main struggle for teachers is not learning new strategies to
teaching but implementing them. The reason traditional professional development is ineffective
is that it does not support teachers during the stage of learning in which is the implementation
stage, this is a gap that must be corrected. In order to truly change practices, professional
development should be ongoing and occur over time. During the implementation stage a teacher
needs to have all the support and practice. To accomplish this, teacher may receive support from
coaches as we know they are highly effective in helping teachers implement a new skill. Teacher

work with their coaches before, during and after a lesson making sure to receive feedback on the
outcome of this newly learned skill. Schools need teachers that not to just implement effective
teaching strategies, but also find strategies that motivate students to practice critical thinking.
Student engagement strategies also support content standard mastery, activate prior knoledge,
foster active investigation, promote group interaction and encourage collaboration. Overall this
article was very informative on the importance and need of professional development. As well of
some of the lack of support when trying to implement a new strategy or skill.
