For this reason, the nominal values of the dedenda ‘generated by standard pinion type cutters differ more or less from the addendum of the basic rack profile of pinion type cutters, the maximum values being ~ 0,05 - m (hub dedendum) and + 0,05 - m (shaft dedendum) respectively. These deviations are to be taken into ‘account as tolerance components when calculating the root diameters generated by pinion type cutters. See subclause 3.3 for working dimensions. 3.2.2 Ovorall sizes ‘The overall sizes of the pinion type cutters shall be as, specified in DIN 1825, DIN 1826, DIN 1828 and DIN 1829 Part 1 and Part 2; see aiso table 1. Disc and hub type cutters are suitable for spline shafts; they are only suitable for spline hubs if the number of hub teeth is at least 1,75 to 1,3 (the factor decreases with increasing number of hub teeth; see table 1) times the number of teeth of the cutter. Shank type cutters are suitable only for spline hubs with ‘correspondingly small numbers of teeth. In such cases, however, suitably shaped disc type or hub type cutters with appropriate cutter holder should also be used where possible since they can be made at lower cost and with ‘greater accuracy. 3.2.3: Splining accuracy ‘The splining accuracy of pinion type cutters for hubs ‘and shafts as specified in this standard corresponds with ‘the permitted individual deviations of quality class A as specified in DIN 1829 Part 2. Irrespective of the module, the tool addendum tolerance, /xapo, shall be + 0,02mm. Cutters designed to give a greater splining accuracy shall be specially agreed. 3.3. Working range Broaches for spline hubs as specified in this standard are single purpose tools because as form-cutting tools they will each cut only one profile (in contrast with generating tools). Broaches cut the hub profile by applying the principle of progressively increasing depth of cut; the ‘cutting edges are given profile taper (see DIN 1415 Part 1 for concepts). They are used for all modules and all numbers of teeth from 6 upwards. At the present time, the largest outside diameter is around 300mm. The broaches are designed to cover a range of hub length 4.2 Types, overall sizes 4.2.1 Types Broaches for hub profiles as specified in this standard are made in two types. Other types, e.g. broaches = for other tolerance zones specif = for internally centred hubs, = for simultaneous broaching of hub tip and root diameters to finished size or for grinding allowance, — meeting special concentricity requirements relating to spline diameters d, to ds or complying with closer eccentricity tolerances are not covered by this standard. in DIN 6480, 4.2.2 Overall sizes Reference shall be made to DIN 1415 Part 1 for details of the design of @ spline hub broach and the concepts sed, ‘The connecting pieces, shank and tal end shall be designed as specified in DIN 1417 Part 1. ‘The previous shank and tail end design as specified in DIN 1416 Part 3 and Part 4 is to be specially agreed. DIN 1416 shall be taken into account regarding the design of the teeth and chip spaces. ‘The overall length of the broach depends on the work- piece, i.e. the length of cut, cutting properties of the hub metal, overall height of the broaching fixture, and ‘on the available broaching machine (broach travel). The hob teeth have @ corrected profile differing from the hub profile. The orm correction depends on the rise per tooth chosen to suit the task performed by the broach. The profile dimensions of the tool cannot be measured on the sizing ‘teeth of the broach. The workpiece profile can only be measured using a test ring broached by the tool. 4.3.3. Hub tooth tip chamfer ‘The usual design of broaches provides tooth tip chamfer (on the hubs for all numbers of teeth with the exception (of hubs having a module m not exeeding 1. This improves the cutting conditions in the range of small involute pressure angles arising with small numbers of teeth, end simplifies the profile grinding of the broach at the tran sition from the flank to the root. Profile shapes ditfer- ing from this design are to be specially agreed. Excep- tions comprise hubs with modules ranging from 0,5 up to and including 1, with tooth tip thicknesses smaller than 0.8mm. In the case of these profiles, a hub tooth tip radius of 0,1 mm results, since the tooth roots of the broach teeth undergo rounding due to grinding wheel wear. ‘The tooth tip chamfer width shall be 0,1° m to 0,18 m, The usable hub tip diameter shall not be increased by the tooth tip chamfer by more than 0.18: m. 43.4 Hub tooth fillet design ‘The tip diameter of the spare teeth shall lie in the upper third of the deviations of the hub root diameter in order ‘to ensure a maximum tool durability. The broached hub root fillet shal be so designed that the fillet radius, 0, does not begin below the form circle diameter of the Page 10 DIN 5480 Part 16 hub and is not les: than the minimum size specified in ‘This off-centre condition manifests itself as eccentricity,” DIN 5480 Parts 3 to 13. The radius shall tangent the but also causes profile form deviations and varying tooth tooth flank and the hub root diameter thicknesses. Inwolute splines with 30° pressure angle; basic dimensions and test dimensions for module 10 DIN 8002 Metal-cutting tools; hobs for spur gears, with clutch drive slot or keyway for modules 1 to 20 Previous editions DIN 5480 Part 16: 09.74, 12.75 Amendments ‘The following amendments have been made in comparison with the December 1975 edition. 4) Basic rack profiles of the generating tools for pre-cutting for subsequent grinding or finishing have been included. b) More detailed information relating to the working dimensions of the generating tools have been provided. ©) The tolerance zone groups associated with the overall sizes of the broaches for hub profiles have been amended. {) More detailed information regarding broach splining accuracy has been provided. ) The standard has been editorially revised. DIN 5480 Part 16 Page 11 Explanatory notes ‘This standard specifies the principal design characteristics of generating tools (hobs, pinion type cutters) and of broaches {or 30° spline joints conforming to the DIN 5480 standard series, “The different tool addenda previously specified have been retained in order to limit the generated tooth depth to the value appropriate to each splining method, and hence to ensure the largest core cross section of the shaft to promote ‘maximum torsional strength resulting in maximum load bearing capecity of the joint. This decision was reached on the basis of scientific investigations which revealed that increasing the addenda to obtain larger tool tooth tip radi, smaller curvature of the tooth root fillets generated does not appreciably increase the strength at the tooth root, but on ‘the contrary would markedly reduce the loadbeering capacity of the joint by decreasing the core cross section of the shaft. “The basic rack profiles of the generating tools for pre-cutting for subsequent grinding or finishing have been included {or the first time. The decisive factors in this connection were the machining allowances, q, specified in DIN 3972 and the principle that the pre-cutting tool cuts the root diameter of the finished spline and thus limits the machining allowance on the tooth flanks. Tooth form corrections of the pre-cut spline, e.g relieving of the tooth root, are to be agreed between the tool manufacturer and the user until such recommendations have been standardized. Subclauses 2.3 and 3.3 dealing with the working dimensions of the generating tools have been revised. They now give the {ull calculation of the generated root diameters and deviations as a function of the tooth thickness deviations and ‘machining allowances, taking into account the special generating conditions applying to the splining of hub and shaft with pinion type cutters. Similarly, the calculation of the tool setting as a function of tooth thickness deviations and of deviations specified for other dimensions has been amended. The required formulae have been presented in form suitable for programming. Generally, with an addendum of 0,55 : m and a tooth tip radius of 0,16 - m the broaches may reliably be expected to produce the required minimum form clearance. Cutting the reference diameter of the hub, they are thus suitable also for ‘externally centred joints assuming suitable addendum tolerance. The limiting of the broach addendum to @ minimum of 0,55 «m permits the use of limited overall lengths. ‘The interchangeability of components of 30° spl revised standard continues to be ensured.
