ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY for TECHNOLOGY - Grades 5-8


2015-2016
Definitions:
USER: students using STGGCS technology, STGGCS Network; Internet, email and other forms of technology services and
products.
NETWORK: STGGCS wired and wireless technology network; home network
DEVICE(S): including but not limited to: desktop computers; NetBook; iPad; Surface RT; Nook; Kindle; NEO2.
TECHNOLOGY: All inclusive term that encompasses Network and Devices.
St. Gregory the Great Catholic School recognizes technology as a valuable educational tool. The administration and faculty are
committed to teaching students to work and learn effectively with technology, with particular emphasis on responsible and ethical use
of technological resources. The policy outlined below applies to all technology use, including but not limited to Internet use. The
expectation is that STGGCS students will abide by and support the policies in this Acceptable Use Agreement. Electronic devices are
subject to wear & tear over time. However, a replacement/repair fee will be assessed to families for loss/ deliberate damage to
school electronic devices.
By signing the St. Gregory the Great Catholic School AUP for Technology, students agree to:
Use STGGCS Network and Technological Resources responsibly.

I will uphold the values of respect, integrity, and honor in my use of technology
I will keep my assigned email, password, and login information private.
I will use my school assigned email for school related purposes ONLY.
I will use my assigned device ONLY, and will inform my teacher immediately if I have any concerns regarding that device.
I will treat all devices with care and respect (I will not bang on monitors; strike keys hard, or mishandle equipment).
I will listen to and follow guidelines for care of each particular piece of equipment as outlined by the teacher.
I will not change desktop settings (such as changing wallpaper or screen savers); download or install programs, without the
approval of my teacher.
I will not use the network for recreational purposes (including but not limited to gaming, downloading music/videos).
I will not use instant messaging.
I will ensure my device is in good order and connect it in the charging cart at the end of each school day.

Be Safe Using Technology.

I will request permission from my teacher, parent, or other supervising adult, prior to accessing the Internet on any device.

I will not share any personal information online (including name, address, phone number, email, password, school name, etc.)

I will not talk to strangers, send pictures of myself to a stranger, or send or post pictures of myself or others.

I will visit only websites linked through the classroom website or directly provided, through the Network, by my teacher.
Be Respectful of Others.

I will respect the privacy of other users.

I will not participate in cyber-bullying by spreading gossip, unkind/damaging comments, and/or accessing any social network
(including but not limited to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, MySpace etc).
Publish Ethically.

I will not plagiarize (using or closely imitating the language and thoughts of another author without authorization and the
representation of that author's work as one's own, as by not crediting the original author).

I will not use technology to cheat.

I will obey copyright and software licensing laws.
I understand that:
The User has no expectation of privacy. Use of computers at St. Gregory the Great Catholic School is a privilege, not a right.
This privilege may be modified, suspended, or revoked if it is abused. There may be further consequences to classroom
performance and/or grades if computer privileges are changed. These consequences are the sole responsibility of the student.
Personal devices: Students who bring personal devices to school from home:
1. Must receive prior permission from the teacher
2. May not use the STGGCS Network with these devices
3. Must surrender the device to the teacher for safe keeping until the device is to be used.
4. Must retrieve the device at the end of the school day.
5. Understand that STGGCS is not responsible for any damage or loss to such devices.

Student User Agreement:
As a User of the St. Gregory the Great Catholic Schools Technologies, I have read, understand, and agree to
abide by the Acceptable Use Policy for Technology. I agree to use all technology in a responsible and respectful
manner while adhering to all rules and policies. I understand that all technological devices at STGGCS are
connected to the school Network; therefore my use of technology can be monitored at any time. I also
understand that, for my safety, my use of the Internet is subject to the protection of the school network firewall.
I understand that my use of technology at STGGCS is a privilege, and subject to following the policies
published in the Acceptable Use Policy.

Parent/ Guardian Agreement


As a parent/guardian, I have read, understand, reviewed and discussed the STGGCS Acceptable Use Policy for
Technology 2013-2014with my child. I understand the importance of adhering to the policies therein, and agree
that the AUP can be amended by the school administration as needed. I agree to support the school in
enforcing these policies. I understand that all technological devices at STGGCS are connected to the school
Network; therefore my childs use of technology can be monitored at any time. I also understand that, for my
childs safety, his/her use of the Internet is subject to the protection of the school network firewall. I agree to
monitor my childs use of technology in my home.

Due to continuous advancements in technology, this AUP may be amended/revised as necessary.
Parents and students will be advised promptly of any such amendments/revisions.

Students may not use technology at STGGCS until this signature page is on file.
Return Signature Page to the school office by Wednesday, September 2, 2015.
