CHAPTER 5: VARIATIONS

SPM HOTS
1) The velocity, v ms-1, of a moving
particle varies directly as the square
root of its kinetic energy, T joule.
When the velocity of the particle is 5
ms-1 , its kinetic energy is 100 joule.
(a) Determine the equation relating v
and T.
(b)Calculate:
(i)
the velocity of the particle
when its kinetic energy is 64
joule.
(ii)
The kinetic energy of the
particle if its velocity is 8
ms-1.

2) The volume of a gas V cm3 , varies

inversely as the pressure, P N/mm2.
Initially, when the pressure of the
gas is 0.08 N/mm2 , its volume is
40cm3.
(a) find the equation which relates V
and P.
(b)calculate:
(i)
the pressure of the gas
when its volume is reduced
by half.
(ii)
The volume of the gas when
its pressure is 0.15 N/mm2.

3) The resistance R ohm, of a piece of

wire of fixed length varies inversely
as the square of the radius of its
cross section, r cm. Given the
resistance of the wire is ohm when
the radius of its cross section is 1
cm, find
(a) the resistance of the wire when
the radius of its cross section is 4
cm.
(b)the diameter of the wire when its
resistance is 8 ohm.

4) The mass of copper, m kg, deposited

by electrolysis in a given voltameter
varies directly as the current, I A, and
the time t s.
4.8 104 k g of copper is deposited
after 30 minutes when the current is
0.80 A. Calculate the mass of copper
deposited after 1 hour when the
current is 0.50 A. Give your answer in
g.
