Thematic reflection 2

It is reasonable to say that knowledge is the most powerful tool in the world. In
addition to that, I want to include that there is a clear separation on being street
smart and books smart. I believe that street smarts shouldnt even be titled with the
word smarts, I see it as common knowledge. In his reading Malcom x was nothing
but a felony who slowly became an intellectual person simply by learning words off
a dictionary. He also picked up various readings in relation to white civilization
across history (x, pg. 130) I am believing that the main idea in this was that when
you open up a book, dont become ignorant and skim it through without
understanding the full message. Malcom x`s story proves that reading can lead a
long way towards academic growth. Devouring literature can prove very beneficial
as it was for X. Throughout the history of schooling, there has been a question that
has been left unquestioned, which is how is knowledge given from instructor to
student, and how is it effective? In a visual representation, we can best describe
knowledge being passed off similar to filling up a car with gas (Lecture 9/28, came
from an illustration professor Tuifua showed us). We the students are empty cars
that need gasoline (knowledge) by our teachers (our only source to fulfill it), who we
assume know all and what is best for us, educationally. This leads to an additional
question, asking what type of learners are we? We learned in a reading by
Constance Staley that we see perceiving knowledge kind of like choosing what to
wear to school (Staley, pg. 10). Does this shirt match my shoes? Does my hair look
slick? Questions like that are easily relatable to ask ourselves how we would prefer
to gain knowledge. There are various types of learners. What we have to find out is
what type of learners are we. Are you a visual learners, who only perceive
knowledge to the best with visual representations? Are we aural learners, those who
are more comfortable with talking by the instructor and nothing else? There are
various other learning types. Some are very common while some are very
imaginative and interesting. In reading by James Twining, we can see our strategy
for learning much like a math problem (Twining pg. 41). Simply for x, which is your
strategy to learn. I later soon realize that the best learner is the learner who
physically interacts with the text. A learner who takes notes, paraphrases sections
of a text to get a better understanding of, who underlines, highlights and all the
additional strategies is more likely to become more successful as upcoming
dignified members of society. Learners should make educational reading
comprehensible for themselves. In conclusion we can say that knowledge is
evolving every step of the way. New theories are discussed, new things arise in
writings. As a society, we will never stay at the same level of intelligence. Instead,
we use the ideas and concepts created in the past to revitalize knowledge for the
next generation of active learners.
