PARENT INPUT:
Declans Mum said she loved the book in a bag idea and thought it was really great
A parent commented on our reflection of the R U OK? Day discussion we had and said it was
a lovely topic to touch on
Parent input forms were handed out describing childrens interests, recent experiences and any
parent ideas.
PROGRAM EVALUATION:
What a busy week! Extending on our excursion to the farm last week, the children have been very
engaged constructing our cardboard cow. The children worked so well together, co-operating and
negotiating their various roles in putting the cow together. They were very creative using their prior
knowledge to consider what features our cow needed, and developed skills problem solving skills
through hypothesizing and testing different methods of putting our cow together. It took a lot of
work and was definitely a team effort! The children were very persistent working through each stage
of the cow development, including painting the boxes and cardboard tubes, putting the head and body
together, attaching the legs (this proved to be the most difficult part of all!), and finally attaching a
glove for the udder so the children could explore milking the cow and playing the role of a farmer,
just like at the farm. Once our cow was put together we took a vote, and it was decided our cow
would be called The Funky Wunky Cow. The cow was placed outside in our dramatic farm area,
where children used the outdoor wooden blocks to build a tractor and build on their experience.
The pigs in mud started as pigs in dirt, however children added water to create a fantastic mud pit
for the pigs. This experience started inside but was moved outside to form part of our farm setup,
providing children the opportunity to adapt their knowledge from the farm into play and explore
varying identities.
The galaxy doh and moonsand were added later in the week after children were looking at the
rocket book and discussing astronauts. Both areas were very popular with children engaging in
amazing imaginary play and exploring space concepts both through play and in and discussions with
one another and at group times. Learning was further extended with children making their own
rockets including the fuel tank and smaller shuttles at the construction table, applying their
knowledge gained from looking at the rocket book into their creations.
Aeroplanes have also been a popular theme, with many children using the blocks to build airports and
runways. Children showed great communication while working together to build their airports, and
talking about their own experiences with aeroplanes.
Our Pyjama day and kinder breakfast to celebrate the last day of term went well, with some
children even trying out new breakfast foods! We also made carrot cake were children developed
mathematical concepts and expanded their vocabulary making predictions and discussing the cooking
process. In the afternoon children were responsible for helping to wash our dirty pigs and cleaning up
the rockets and astronauts that had been in the moon sand. Children worked together, developing
their sense of agency and responsibility for the environment.
MOVING FORWARD: If I had another week..
When we come back from the holidays I would like to encourage children to be responsible for their
learning by asking them what they would like to play with our learn in the coming weeks. This will
set the scene for future planning.
I would also use the information I received in the parent feedback forms make program changes.
Given childrens enjoyment in sensory experiences this week I would like to implement more of these,
perhaps making goop together. I would also like to continue with book in a bag and incoorpating
movement into group times
