Everyoneremembersthetimetheirparentstookthemtothecinemaforafilmorthe
countlessSaturdaystheywouldjumpoutofbed,rushdownthestairs,andturnonthetelevision
tocatchthemorningcartoons.Eventoday,childrenandadultsreminisceatthethoughtoftheir
favoritecharactersandlaugh.Fromtheirenjoyment,anewfieldarose.Themovingdrawings
theyhadallcometolovebroughtsomethingnewtothetablesuchasvivid,comedicscenesand
caststhatsurpassedthelimitedliveactionproductions.Today,illustrationinmotionhas
evolvedmetamorphosizinganddividingtoavastarrayofmodernindustries,andallowingthe
birthofmoderndaysuperpowers,includingthevideogameindustry.Acareerinanimation,
whilearelativelynewconcept,hasquicklyestablisheditselfasanimportantpartofsociety,
integratingitselfwithdifferentindustriesandturningtheworldofentertainmentupsidedown.
Today,toinitiateacareerinanimation,astudentmustattendaschoolthatoffersgraphic
designasamajor.AfewexamplesoftheseincludeNorthCarolinaStateUniversity(NCState),
SavannahCollegeofArtandDesign(SCAD),andUniversityofNorthCarolinaatCharlotte.To
achievesuccessinthefield,astudentneedsartistictalent,decentmathskills,patience,anda
loveforthejob.Afterthenewlyadeptanimatorgraduatesfromcollege,hewillfindplentyof
diversejobsincareersrangingfrommovieanimationtofashiondesign.Vocationsinvolving
construction,entertainment,advertising,andfashionneedgraphicdesignerstoutilize3DCGI,

foranythingfromplanningoutalandscapetopromotingaproduct.Unfortunately,notall
universitiesoffergraphicdesignasamajor,andthosewhodohaveyettofullydefinethe
curriculum.CollegessuchasNCStatedonotnecessarilyteachthesamematerialascollegeslike
SCAD.NCState,atypicaluniversity,willnotputasmuchemphasisonart,butratherfocuses
onthemathandsciencebehindgraphicdesign.Ontheotherhand,SCAD,afineartscollege,
willmainlyfocusontheartisticpartsofanimation,orthedrawingsanddesigns.Thismakes
animationeducationconfusingandtedious.Despitethehardshipsoflearningtheart,graphic
designstillholdsfirmasanimportantpartofmanydifferentaspectsofsociety.Ofcourse,
animationdidnotstartoutsoquintessential("HowtoBecomeaGraphicDesigner).
Toattainacareerinanimation,thepersonseekingworkmustmakehimselfseem
impressive.Takingfouryearsofartschoolworkswell,ascompaniesthathiregraphicdesign
majorswillusuallylookatnewgraduatesandofferthemjobs.Newgraduateshavethemost
updatedskillsinthefieldandmighthavesomethinguniquetooffertheiremployers.Gettinga
collegedegreedefinitelyputsanaspiringanimatoronthepathtosuccess,buthehasother
options.Withenoughskillanddedication,agraphicdesignerwillgetajobwithoutadegree.He
needstoputhimselfontheradarbydoingsomethingimpressive.Inrecentyears,manywebsites
offerthemselvesasmediumsthatallowanimatorstodisplaytheirexpertise,allowingartiststo
posttheircartoonsoranimationsonaforum.Somecompanieslookatthesewebsites,aswellas
colleges,whentheyrequirenewtalent,sotheymakesuretheyacquirethecreamofthecrop
(HowtoBecomeaGraphicDesigner).
Whilemostcompaniesdolookforartistswhodisplayconsiderableexpertise,theytake
otherfactorsintoconsiderationaswell.Selfmotivationplaysabigroleingettingananimatora

jobmainlythroughnetworking,orcontactingprofessionalsalreadyworkingandaskingthem
forhelp(Barends).Communicatingwithanexpertwillincreasethechancesofgetting
recognizedbythepeopletheexpertworksfor.Puttingineffortandgettinginvolvedinthe
businessshowspotentialemployersanartistslevelofdedication.Unfortunately,thistaskproves
difficultduetothelevelofcompetitioninthefieldofanimation.Artistsmustimprove

chancesofemploymentdramatically.Companiesneedtonsofanimators,butnojobscome

anywherefromfivetoahundredworkers,allcompletingtheirownpartofaproject.Oneperson

mightworkontheeyeofacharacter,whileanotherpersonworksonthecharactersfinger.This
animationusuallyincludesthreedimensionalcomputergeneratedimagery,butcanalsoinvolve
handdrawncartoons.Infact,twodimensionalillustrationswerewhatfoundedthefieldof
graphicdesign(HowtoBecomeaGraphicDesigner).
Ofcourse,hightechanimationdidevolvefromtwodimensionalart,andwhenpeople
thinkanimation,cartoonsusuallycometomind.NostalgicworkssuchasDisneys
Steamboat
Willie
andWarnerBrothers
LooneyToons
willforeverlivewithintheheartsofchildrenand
adultsalike,andthefranchisestheyrepresentcontinuetobenefitfromtheirpopularity.These
historicpiecesofmovingartestablishedadominantindustrythefieldofentertainment,butthey
hadhumbleorigins.ItallstartedwithamannamedWaltDisney.Shockingly,oneofthemost
importantmeninartworkedinemergencyrescuedoodlingonthesideofhisambulance.Disney
feltpeoplesdrawingsneededsomethingmore,tomakethemincreasinglyinterestingand
thoroughlyenjoyable.Hissolution:createthousandsofdrawingscoincidingwitheachotherina
sequencetomakeacharacterlookasifitweremovingaroundorperformingactionsinrealtime.
Practicingwithstickfigures,Disneyfoundplausibilityinhisidea,butitconsumedtoomuch
timeforonemantoaccomplishalone.Hegatheredateamoftalentedartists,allofwhom
workedwithcartoonstripsorstorybookillustrations,andstartedworkingonthestoryof
Mortimerthemouse
(Harmon).Withhisguidance,theteamofsimpleillustratorstransformeda
stagnantfigureintoawalking,talking,whistlingcaricature.In1928,Disneyreleasedhiscartoon
SteamboatWillie
,featuringnoneotherthanMortimerMouse,renamedMickeybyDisneyswife
(Harmon).Mickeysdebutlandedhiscreatorsoveramillionfansworldwide,andDisneydidnot
letthispopularitygotowaste(Harmon).

Afterthereleaseof
SteamboatWillie
,WaltDisneyknewhehadanopportunitytomakeit
bigintheentertainmentindustry.KnowingMickeyMousesnewfoundfamewouldgiveita
runningstart,heimmediatelyinitiatedaprojectcoinedthe
ThreeLittlePigs
afilmwhichalso
nettedhimplentyoffundsandfavoruponitspremiere(Harmon).Next,Disneytookonagreater
challengeafulllengthfeaturefilm,drawncompletelybyhand.Histeamsproduct,
SnowWhite
andtheSevenDwarfs,
hittheatresinDecemberof1937,andearnedDisneymillions(Harmon).
ThefilmwonmanyawardsandDisneygrewincrediblywealthy,butthissuccesswouldnotlast
forever.AsaresultofWorldWarII,Disneytemporarilylostitsnationalaudiencecausing
profitstoplummet.NotonlydidDisneystrugglefinancially,butemotionallyaswell.Hismother
passedaway,andhistendencytobreakintofitsoffuryisolatedhimfromothers.Evenhisteam
ofanimators,whomheconsideredhisfamily,wentonstriketoprotesthisconstantperiodsof
obscenerage(Harmon).EventhoughDisneymanagedtocalmhisemployeesdownandgetthem
workingagain,theyallfellpreytothe1944draft,andnevercompletedanynewprojects
(Harmon).Regrettably,WaltDisneydiedoflungcancerin1966afternearlycompletinghis
themeparkinFlorida,andneversawthereleaseofanotherinfluentialfilm.However,Disneys
quintessentialworklegitimizedcareersinanimation,anddespitehisnumerousflawsand
failures,hislegacyofsuccesswillneverfade.RightaroundthetimeofDisneysdecline,afew
newcontendersappearedonthescene(Harmon).
Whenpeoplethinkabouttraditionalanimation,WarnerBrothersneverfailstocometo
mind.MillionsgetschillsofnostalgiawhentheyremembershowslikeScoobyDooandthe
LooneyToons.Thesetelevisionprogramsdefineanewgenerationofentertainmentthe
generationbuiltbytheWarnerBrothersemployeeandcreatoroftheLooneyToons,Chuck

Jones.Jonestookthenewborncareerofanimationandnurseditwithhisownart,helpingitgrow
andbecomeahealthy,happyindustrythattheworldowesitschildhood.Jonesdrewhiswayinto
historywithhisLooneyToonstelevisionprogram,turninganimalsintogoofy,humanlike
charactersthatneverneededtocrackjokesorspoutobsceneprofanitiestogetagiggleoutof
theiraudience.Thesecartoonanimalsstretched,bended,burned,andexplodedinwaysthatwere
anythingbuttypicalforthetime,grantingthemaudienceappealthatothertelevisionprograms
justcouldnotcompetewith.Jonesmanagedtocraftenoughloveandhumorintoeverycellof
thecartoonsothateventhemosthorrificofaccidentsappearamusing.Heputhisheartintothe
creatureshecreated,theyexistasseparatepartsofhisownsoul,representinghisidealsandhis
ownsenseofcomedy.Jones,apioneerinentertainment,taughtfutureanimatorstolovetheir
workandharnessthatpassionintoatool(LoveandRockets).
WhileAmericahadcartoons,Japanhadanime:aformofmovingartthatimplemented
morerealismanddetailthanwesternanimation.Thisgenreofentertainmentdatesbacktothe
1950s,whenAmericasworldwarconflictwithJapancametoaclose.Animeshows,suchas
Astroboy
and
SpeedRacer
,earnedenoughpopularitytoreachdifferentpartsoftheworld,
includingEuropeandAmerica.Theseproductions,alongwithmanyothers,playedonthesame
televisionchannelsasAmericancartoons,eventuallyleadingtotheirlocalizationandadoption
intowesternculture.Around1985,HayaoMiyazakifoundedStudioGhibli,which
singlehandedlypopularizedanimeinAmerica(Halsall).In1999,Ghiblireleased
Princess
Mononoke
,afilmwhichgatheredenoughfanstoestablishMiyazakiasaprominentdirectorand
ensurehisfuturesuccessonaglobalscale(Halsall).Asafollowup,Ghibliunveiled
Spirited
Away
,aproductionthatbeatoutDisneyandwonthe2002Oscarawardforbestanimatedfeature

film(Halsall).DuringthetimeofGhiblisdominance,televisionstationsimmediatelystarted
includinganimeintheirregularprogrammingschedules.Soonenough,Nickelodeon,Cartoon
Network,andevenDisneyChannelowedtheirratingstoJapan(Halsall).
ThankstoStudioGhibli,animefloodedintothewestatabreakneckpace.Japanactually
establisheditselfasapartofwesternculturethroughanime.Americalovedanimesmodern,
realisticallydetailedstyleofanimation.Animealsohadvariety,rangingfrominnocentcartoons,
like
Pokemon
and
Yugioh,
tomoreviolentandadultorientedprograms,including
DragonBallZ
and
Naruto
(Halsall).Animehadeverythingwesterncartoonsdid,alongwithsomethingextra.
Duringthistime,Japanrecognizedanimeasaformoffineart.Inordertoencouragethecreation
anddistributionofanime,JapanscollegesadoptedManga/Animedesignasanactualcareer
path,andofferedguidancetohelpindividualswhowantedtopursuethatvocation(Halsall).
Meanwhile,Americastillthoughtofanimationasabeneficialmistakethathadnopermanent
placeintheeconomy,andcollegesstillhavenotcompletelyintegrateditintotheircurriculum
mostrefusetoevenofferitasacareeroption.Fortunately,recentproductionsanddevelopments
leaveanimationanundeniablyimportantpartofentertainment,andsomeuniversitiesnow
recognizeitasalegitimatedegreeinart(HowtoBecomeaGraphicDesigner).
Beforetheriseofeasternanimation,Disneymadeasplashwithanewmovierelease.
The
LittleMermaid
,amovieaboutalittleredheadedfishhybridandhersaltyseafriends,grossed
$211.3millionworldwideandearnedtwoAcademyawards,foreverchangingthelandscapeof
animatedfeaturefilms(Young).Thismusical,magicalstorysangitswayintotheheartsof
childrenandadultsalike,rakinginmillionsoffanfundsandearningDisneysubstantial
publicity.Previoustothereleaseofthisfeaturedfilm,thepublicconsideredDisneyan

traditionalanimation,accumulatingenoughresourcestoallowforcreativeandinnovativenew
developmentsandestablishingDisneyasasuperpowerofentertainment.
Afterhittingallofthoseboxofficegrandslams,Disneyvirtuallymonopolizedthe
animationindustry.AnyandallcompetitionsulkedindismaywheneveranewDisneyfilmhit
theatres.Then,after60yearsofbenevolent,yetchildfriendlyrule,themonarchofanimated
motionpicturessuddenlyandinexplicablyfelltoanewage.TheHouseofMousedynastyfellby
thehandofSteveJobs,thefounderofAppleComputersandPixarAnimationStudios.Jobs
reachedunsurmountableheightswhenheworkedforApple,butaseriesofunfortunateevents,
causedbyhisownambitionandanger,torethecompanyhecreatedtoshreds.Theverypeople
heputinchargeofthecompanyfiredhimduetohisbehaviortowardemployeesworkingbelow
him(Krantzetal).Hisdestructiveformofcriticismisolatedhimfromothers,causingthemto
misunderstandand,insomecases,downrightdespisehim.Jobsoverworkedhisunderlingstothe

imagery(CGI),andsawitspotential.HeboughtstocksinagroupnowknownasPixar,and
eventuallyowneditalongwithacomputercompanycalledNeXT.Undertheguidanceofthe
Jobs,Pixareventuallyreleasedthefirstfulllengthcomputeranimatedfilm:

.Debatably
themostinnovationalproductionsincecartoonsoriginated,
ToyStory
buriedSteveJobsandhis
companyinsuccess.Pixarstechnologyandartastoundedaudiences,rippingtheMouse
Kingdomfromitspedestal.WhileJobseventuallysoldhisstockinPixartoDisney,therelease
of
Toy

Story
broughthimafortune.Ironically,JobsactuallyreturnedtoAppleasthenewchief
executiveofficer,workinghiswaybackuptheladderofsuccessatthecompanyhehelpedstart.
JobsrevolutionizedthefilmmakingindustrywithCGI,andusheredinanewageofgraphic
designandcomputeranimation(Krantzetal).
SteveJobswasnottheonlypioneerincomputerimagery.AFrench,bornPolish,
mathematiciannamedBenoitMandelbrotbroughtsciencetotheworldofcomputerart,allowing
ittogrowandflourishwithprecision.Mandelbrotearnedhisreputationinarithmeticthroughhis
researchonfractals,curvedpartsofawholethatdeterminetheshapeofalargerfigure
(Driscoll).MandelbrotdiscoveredtheseunitswhileworkingfortheInternationalBusiness
Machines(IBM),wherehewasputinchargeofcomputertranslationprogramming.Duringhis
timeatIBM,Mandelbrotcameintocontactwithchaostheoryamidstallthecodeanddata
containedwithincomputers.Heneededorderwithintheamalgamofinformation,sohe
developedawaytoshowpatternsincomputerdata:usingfractals(Driscoll).Theseirregular

figuresenabledorganizationwithincomputers,changingameaninglessstreamofcodeintoa
cohesivemessage.Fractalsassistcomputerengineersinidentifyingbitsofdatabyshowing
similaritiesanddifferencesintheirshape,thereforemakingcloudsofdataactuallydiscernable
andconsiderablylesschaoticintheeyesofexperts(Driscoll).Computerartistsgenerateand
manipulatepolygons,whichconsistoffractals,inordertofabricatedigitalimagery.Thepatterns
infractalsallowanimatorstomoldapolygonintosomethingelse,suchasabirdoraplane.

ownedbyNintendo,stoodamongthefirsttoentertheworldof3Dimagery,andtheyreceived
plentyofattentionforit.Seeinggreatsuccessfromthe
Nintendo64
,SonyCorporationdecided
toproducegameswithasimilarstyleontheirowninnovativeconsole,thePlaystation(Robbins).
Konamireleased
MetalGearSolid
,astealthbasedroleplayinggamedesignedin3D,and
receivedimmensepublicityaswell.Soonenough,everycompanywouldoutfittheirnewgames
with3DgraphicsandCGI.Sincethebattlefieldoftechnologyhadequalized,designersstartedto
lookfornewwaystostandoutmainlythroughthedevelopmentofinterestingnewgameplay.
Asaresponsetothisnewmarket,RareLtd.produced
GoldenEye007
(1997),asubstantially
successful,firstpersonshooter(FPS)multiplayergamebasedontheJamesBondmovies
(Robbins).Theabilitytoengageinasemirealisticgunfightwithfriendsandfamilyappealedto
themasses,andsocompaniesprioritizedFPSstylegames.CGIandanimationalloweddesigners
tocreateasemirealisticbattlescenario,thusmakingthegameappearrealisticenoughto
simulatearealshootout,andaudiencespaidhundredsfortheadrenalinerushthisrevolutionary
FPSgameprovided.Thesuccessofthesegameseventuallyinvokesactionfromlarge
corporations,whoshapevideogamesintomultimilliondollarprojects(Robbins).
MicrosoftCorp.conceivedtheXbox(2001)inordertogainaccesstothegoldmineof
videogaming(Robbins).Theyproduced

afuturisticFPSthatusedthe
mostadvancedgraphicsofitstime(Robbins).Thepubliclovedit.

andnewonlinegameplay,andtheydevotedtheirentiredaytothegame.Nobodycouldcompete
with
WoW
,notevenfamilymemberstheexperienceofplayingwithfriendsandtraversinga
worldpreviouslyunexploredappealedtobuyersfaroutmatchedthethoughtofhomeworkor
evengoingdowntodinnerwiththefamily(Green).Artistsmanagedtocraftanactualplanetfor
theirplayers,completewithstunningrealismandinnovativemechanics.Thesetting,theplayer
