Standard 4: Instructional Delivery and Management

Physical education teacher candidates use effective communication

and pedagogical skills and strategies to enhance student engagement
and learning.

It is vital for a physical educator to be able communicate to be successful. The

teacher must be able to use clear and effective communication skills both verbal and
non-verbal to assist in student learning and motivation. The educator must be able to
verbally explain the task at hand to the students as well as demonstrate to them utilizing
instructional cues to connect the task to their learning experience. As physical
educators, it is extremely important that we give constructive, instructional feedback
throughout our lessons in order to teach our students with quality instruction.
Physical educators must be able to manage their classroom effectively in order to
utilize their time efficiently to maximize the amount of activity time. This ties back to
effective communication. If the objectives and lessons are communicated effectively
this will allow more time for active learning in the physical education classroom.
Physical education teachers should also be able to have organizational skills in their
classroom. This is done by having rules and consequences, setting and maintaining a
concise routine, and utilizing quick, easy, and efficient transitions between activities to
ensure that your students are safe and your classroom remains in order.
