Lesson Plan Topic:

Comparisons
Date:
9/15/15
Estimated Time:
40 minutes
Grade Level:
2
School Site:
Triggs Elementary
State Standard: H1.2.1 Compare the local community with others around the nation.
Teaching Models: whole-group, small-group
Objectives: Students will (SW) be able to compare our community in Las Vegas to five various
communities in different parts of the U.S. through a hands-on group activity to obtain new
information as they "travel" to these new communities. SW then write this new information
down on a given worksheet to share as a class later on for discussion.
Materials and Technology Resources: Books on five different locations mentioned in
procedures. Pictures of each community and things found within them. Examples of
transportation: subway, bike, trolley, cab, car. Print-outs on the community's overall
characteristics. Pictures of each place. Five iPads for students to watch clips of each place to
visualize. "Classroom Community" worksheet.
Instructional Procedures:
a. Motivation/Engagement:
1. SW be shown a large wall map of the United States with 5 stickers placed on
San Francisco, CA, Jackson, WY, Chicago, IL, New York City, NY, and New
Orleans, LA for the activity.
2. They will be asked if they know what this (map) is.
3. They will be asked what they already know about the map.
4. SW be asked if they've ever been to any other places on the map.
b. Developmental Activities or Learning Experiences:

2
1. SW be asked if they know where Las Vegas is on the map.
2. A student will be picked to put a sticker on the location of Las Vegas on the
map.
3. SW be informed on the directions of the map. i.e. This is North, this is the
"East coast," South, and so on.
4. SW be asked to identify the places marked with stickers on the map.
5. I will create a KWL chart for these five places on the board.
6. SW be asked what they already know about all 5 places for KWL.
7. SW be asked what they want to find out about them for KWL.
There are 5 areas in the classroom set up with books and resources to learn about each
specific place on the map that student will rotate or "travel" to.
8. SW be instructed to, with their table groups, to go to a set-up location in the
room.
9. SW learn about the different places by reading information, watching videos
from iPads, and looking at pictures found at
each "station" per place around the classroom.
10. SW use this worksheet to fill in learned
information about each place.
11. SW rotate to a new station every 5 minutes in order to
complete the chart to the left.
12. SW return to their seats with completed worksheet.

3
13. I will ask my students about the information learned in this activity from the
various locations.
c. Closure:
1. SW be instructed to share what they have "learned" as a class to complete our
KWL chart regarding the new information on the five different places in the U.S.
2. I will ask my students to tell me what they think is different about all five places
compared to Las Vegas.
3. I will ask my students what they think is similar about all five places compared to
Las Vegas.
d. Extension:
1. "What other places do you think are different from Las Vegas? Why?"
2. "What makes Las Vegas so unique and special?"
Accommodations, Modifications and Differentiations for Diverse Learners:
a. Small group pairings will be based on compatibility: students who don't mind helping
and are good at explaining will be paired with learners who need more help.
Assessment and Evaluation of Learning:
a. Formative: Observing how students are doing in the small-group activity portion and
assessing their understanding before they share their information to the class at the end.
Jumping in to provide feedback when need-be.
b. Summative: A probable way to formally assess my students would be to do a project
on a certain area (different from the five places in this lesson) and compare/contrast that
new community with the information learned during this class about our own community.

4
Homework Assignment: Students will pick/research a new place, anywhere in the nation, to do
a project on in the future.

Reflection:
a. Strengths:
b. Concerns
c. Insights
