A commszcial trailing socket to be wodified or « self-made box vith several sockets.Comments:
This circuit consists of ¢ Trailing Socket (also called Extension or Distribution Socket) or
similar device where two, three or more sockets (depending an the box dimensions and on
constructor’s needs) will be pavered only when a current flows in the Cantral Socket.
For example: if an electric drill is connected to the Control Sccket, the Switched Sachets
wil be powered each tine the electric dril is running, In this case, a lamp could b=
connected ta a Switched Socket and wil jluminate when the dril is operating,
Anathar example: a cask lamp could ba connected te the Contral Socket and a PC, 2
Monitar and a Printer cauld be connactad to the Switched Sockets and will be running
after the lamp is switched on. Switching off the lamp, all the above mentioned appliances
wil b2 automatically switched aff,
4 further applicaticn is the central of a High Fidality chain, plugging the Power Amplifier in
the Cantral Sockat and - fer example - CD Player, Tape Recorder, and Tuner in the
Switched Sockets. Usually, trailing sockets are placed to the reer of the appliances, aften
in pleces not easily reachable, so, even if the sacket has a switch, itis much easier to
switch on and cff the High Fidelty chain from the min amplifier itself
‘The same consideration is vald for computer-monitor-prntar chains ete. Nevertheless, in
this case, the use af a table lamp plugged in the Control Socket is almost mandstory, 35
explained below,
In fact, this very sencitive circuit works fine when appliances having full breaking
switches like lamas, drils, most power amplifiers, old radios, ald TY sets, fans, almost all
electrical househeld appliances ete. are plugged in the Cantral Socket, This is kecause
these devices have @ switch that fully excludes the internal circuitry from the mains
Unfortunately, in modem devices like computers, monitors, CD players, recent racios and
TY sats (Usually powarad by means of intemal “switching” suppias), the power switch
does not completely isolate the internal circuitry fram the mains, a5 transient suppressors
and other corpanents remain on circuit. This causes a very small current ta flaw across
the sensing circuitry, but sufficient to trigger the output Triac.
‘Therefore, the switched devices will remain always on, no matter if the central applance
is on ar aff. This could alsa happen when devices connactad to the mains by maars of
plugrin power supply adapters are used as control appliances, due to their lack of a mains
switch,
In spite of this restriction, the circuit can be stil useful, due ta the high number and
varioty of ceviegs allowing impaceable performance whan thay are plugged in the Cantral
SocketCircuit operation:
sig back-to-hack power diodes are connected in sarias to tha Control Sacket, The
current drawn by the device plugged inta this sncket when in the on state, flowing
through the dicce chain, causes 2 voltage drop of abaut 2¥. This valcage, limited by RL,
Crues the Gate af the Triac D7 whieh, in turn, will ewitcn the output sockets
C1 and R2 form a co called “Srubber network", helping to eliminate switching transients
generated by inductive Inads
Notes:
‘The circuit is sufficiently small tc 42 embedded inta same types af commercial
trailing sockets, or a box with a number of sockets can be made at will
The diode types suggested in the Parts List Far O1 ta D6 will slow an applance cf
up ta about S00W power to be plugged in the Control Secket, Use BYSS0-800
diodes for up te 800 - L000".
For lass demanding appliances, 1N4007 diodes will cllaw up te 200W powor
‘The Trac type suggested in the Parts List for D7 will allow a total power available
to the Switshad Sackets of more than 1000W. If you intend to drive loads cf mare
than 500W tatal, ploaso use a suitable haatsink,
Wanting to cive less powerful loads, you ean use for D7 a TICQL6M (up ta 800 -
1000W) or a TICZO6M (up to S00 - 600W),
Warning! The device is connected to 230Vac mains, sa some parts in the circuit
board are subjected to lethal potential! Avoid touching the circuit when the mains
cord is plugged in!
