Article #1: Promoting Professionalism through Ethical Behaviors in the Academic Setting
Respond to the below questions:

1. Suggest a strategy by which an undergraduate dietetics program should maintain awareness of

ethical behaviors and standards in its students and faculty (your answer must be your own ideas;
unique to those suggested in the article).
Dietetic students should be encouraged to come up with their own interpretations on why ethical
behaviors and standards are important and the different ways to raise awareness of the issue. The
students would be more likely to execute these ethical behaviors when they find their own reasons
to act on it. Other students are also more likely to be influenced by their own peers than the other
age groups whom they dont necessarily relate to.

2. Suppose a student in your Nutrition Across the Lifespan course told you they had a list of

questions from previous exams that were collected in a manner similar to that described in
Situation #3 in this article. How would you handle this situation based on the Academy of
Nutrition and Dietetics Code of Ethics and the Virginia Tech Honor Code?
Based on the ACEND Code of Ethics, the dietetic practioner should report any inappropriate
behavior of another practitioner and would not take part in dishonest or misleading practices.
Therefore, I definitely would not accept the list of questions from the other student and the right
thing to do is to report the misconduct. Otherwise, it would be considered cheating until the VT
Honor Code if I were to use the collected questions.

Article #2: Eating Disorders among Dietetics Students: An Educators Dilemma

Respond to the below questions:

3. Considering Principle 17C, how might disordered eating by a dietetics professional impact his/her
ability to care for clients/patients?
The dietetic professional could possibly misdiagnose and misguide the patients due to his/her own
emotional and mental instability. If the professional is anorexic because of distorted social
expectations, he/she can also possess a distorted perception of the patient, exert discriminatory
behavior, and advise him/her to eat less. If the professional is bulimic, binges and overeat, he/she
may not recognize that its a problem with a patient with similar behaviors.

4. What is your responsibility for action if you found out one of your peers in the DPD program had
an untreated eating disorder? Describe at least three resources at Virginia Tech that are available
to help you manage this situation.
The top three Virginia Tech resources that would help a students eating disorder include the
Cook Counseling Center, Nutrition Counseling Services and the Schiffert Health Center. Cook
Counseling Center can help manage a stressful situation in my peers life that may have led to
this eating disorder. Nutrition Counseling can assess my friends current habits and help
him/her reach nutrition and health goals. Schiffert Health Center/Nutrition Services provides
nutrition 101 workshops as well as a registered dietitian for personalized nutrition counseling.
