During the second half of the nineteenth century, the United States experienced an industrial
revolution unparalleled in the New World up to that point in time. As factories, mines, and mills
sprouted out across the map, cities grew up around them. The landscape of America drastically
changed as new jobs, citizens, and conquests emerged. What makes this revolution especially
intriguing is that it occurred immediately after the horrors of the Civil War had bitterly divided the
country. The new wave of immigration and urbanization that accompanied this industrial boom
helped reunite the country as it entered the new century.

The first evidence of change that came with this new

industrialism was the wave of immigration that arrived on the coasts of America towards the end
of the Civil War.
